A college degree represents a commitment on your part to specialize in a particular field. Notably, this is important because it helps you focus on a career. It is also a step forward towards your becoming a working professional one day. While you are gaining and honing skills in your chosen specialization, the college also provides you with other opportunities (Yu, 2012). As a result, college education seemingly appears to have both destructive and positive effects on both the learners and the community. With a university education, you may earn additional income. Agreeing to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average weekly paychecks in 2014 for high school leavers aged 25 years and above were $ 668, while those aged 25 and over who had a bachelor’s degree were $ 1101 (U.S. BLS 2015). Redundancy levels are also greatly influenced by a college education. BLS conveyed that high school graduates suffered an unemployment rate of 6% in 2014. The joblessness proportion for those with college gradations was merely 3.5%. As a general rule, it is not. However, for a significant minority, getting a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject can help start a career. For a smaller minority, it is the first stage and a necessary entry to further studies leading to a profession. Many people can lead to useful and fulfilling lives without a bachelor’s degree. They may become highly qualified in craft skills such as plumbing, carpentry, engineering, or agriculture via apprenticeships (Kier et al. 2014). Others may use their natural talents and nature for the jobs which run our society. At the same time, many employers demand the qualification for jobs which could be done by a reasonable eighteen-year-old. A college education is used to limit the pile of applications looking for a wage rather than any actual interest in the work (Yu, 2012). For many people, a suitable bachelor degree makes an excellent start to a career which meets their talents and interest (Bailey, Belfield, Jenkins, & Kopko, 2015). However, just getting any degree does not provide a meal ticket or evidence that you are worth more than others. For many others, it is real-time, an opportunity squandered.

So for middle-class young people with a certain level of academic ability, getting a bachelor’s degree is considered normal and, therefore, important as standard progress. Doing other things is an aberration, and they are often influenced to “get your degree first.” However, starting a degree as a mature student when you have found out why you need it and precisely what subject will suit, you can be a life-changing and enhancing experience. Far too many young people get the benefits of life as a student, which can be tremendous but relatively little of long-term value from their actual studies. Mainly this includes those who are hired because they went to a prestigious university. You must have been smart to get in and those who take a vocational course like engineering, which demonstrates their mathematical ability and join the financial sector to manipulate markets.

In conclusion, the standard answer as to why college is valuable is to improve your opportunities at having a decent standard of living. Many jobs, even ones in which one doesn’t truly need a bachelor’s degree to perform adequately, require a bachelor’s degree because graduation from college is a signal that the person is above average in intelligence and has the perseverance to reach a non-trivial goal. My answer is that it will open your mind to a world far more significant than the provincial view one gets in secondary education. It will allow you to expand and sharpen your intellectual skills. While these may be part of the reason your employment opportunities will be developed, they are valuable reasons by themselves. Personal intellectual growth is a reward in itself. It will allow you to approach all facets of life with an improved ability to make well-informed and well-founded choices.
