Variation in healthcare

Variation in healthcare is the disparity in the processes and outcomes in the health sector. Mapping healthcare variations is an essential way of knowing how the healthcare system provides its services to the patients (Ward, Marsolo & Froehle, 2014). The variations in clinical and healthcare workers are enormous, backed by the general notion that good practice is not customarily adopted everywhere. Even though some aspects of variation in the healthcare system are being addressed, it does not receive the full attention it should. This, to some extent, is a reflection of some of the difficulties encountered in the healthcare system due to healthcare variation like the lack of theoretical framework and methodology for change management among the professionals, poverty on some of the data, resistance perusal from outside parties and lack of information on what the variations signify (Mpanza, 2019). There are many variations in different aspects of the unexplained health sector, which is inevitable due to how complex it was and how difficult it is to control all the variables responsible for producing it. Some of these variations can be explained by the patients’ attributes or by the disparities in health practitioners’ capacities.

There is, however, a certain amount of variation that is legitimate and even helpful to the healthcare system. For instance, it is not rational to ask a naturally slow surgeon to work faster. This issue can be well explained using the term ‘unwarranted clinical variation.’ Menon (2017) defined unwarranted clinical variation as ‘care that is not consistent with a patient’s preference or related to [their] underlying illness.’ There are also some differences through which the systems work beyond the clinicians’ work variations, which creates some variations in some of the critical indicators like access, processes, and even outcomes

The processes include diagnosing diseases, treating diseases, detecting some of the patients’ health problems, maintaining their health, and providing good euthanasia services to them. These processes can be impacted by some of the healthcare variations caused by a lack of significance in an individual patient’s values, irregular variations that may be based on historical experience, probabilistically predictable variations, and other active phenomena within the healthcare system. Other special causes are to some extent more significant than others, which include some evidence from the intrinsic change within the systems, variations that are not based on the historical experience, inherently unpredictable variations, and the new, unexpected, and overlooked phenomena within the healthcare systems (Variation in healthcare does it matter and can anything be done?, n.d.).

The health sector has lots of dynamic changes that are increasingly posing challenges to healthcare providers. The current healthcare system is even more confusing to the healthcare professionals due to factors like uncertainties in the economic state, insufficient resources, the shooting cost of providing healthcare services, dynamics in the regulatory requirements, and inadequate medical services delivery. Other factors that can also create hurdles in the delivery of better health services and maintaining outstanding levels of stakeholder satisfaction include shifts in the demography, change in the patients’ lifestyles competitive market, and innovations in the medical sector (“Reducing Variation in Healthcare to Boost Improvement,” 2017).
