University admission comparison between China and the US
China and the US have different yet similar systems for their requirements for entry into the university. Like the US SAT, China has an equivalent of the standardized exams known as GaoKao. The GaoKao carries similar intensity to SATs. Students on both factions spend years studying for the exam to gain entry into prestigious elite universities. It is a bit scandalous because even after gaining entry marks into the top universities, very few students can afford to pay tuition (Reilly 4). Only the elite enjoy that privilege, which should not be the case. Universities should be made affordable for every student who qualifies to join to curb corruption. Unlike the SAT provision of three times trial, with a combination of top scores from each section, students in China can only take GaoKao once a year, which means students in China only have one shot to get into university. In China, academic talents and achievements are the most primal considerations. They do not give much consideration to other talents beyond academia. However, US admissions go beyond just the academic achievements of a student. They consider other special talents that the student might possess (Reilly 2). A weak SAT score and a unique talent can gain a student entry into any prestigious university of their choice, which is not China’s case. While the US values the all-rounded nature of a student, China only values academic talents.
