Introduction

Authors have applied various stylistic devices and techniques in expressing their creativity through short stories. The quality and amalgamation of the devices used in any creative job determine its level of attraction and captivity to the audience, who are the readers. Many of the short story writers have majored on developing the plot and setting of the whole book, in the introduction of each story. Setting and flow of the ideas in the book, act as the attention gutter, for readers and thus pokes the creativity to read the remaining parts of the story. Mitchell, anthropology of short stories, by the name “Cloud Atlas” is not an exception to setting and plot as a stylistic device to build the literature work. The setting for any creative work or when used in short stories helps in creating the instances at which events unfold throughout the story. It through the setting basics, the flow is determined. Poor setting background of any story can pose a great challenge to the author in trying to develop ideas through the sections of the story. Michell, story consist of six stories which have the first section and second section. The sections are divided into chapters and without relevant connection of ideas in each section to the other, and chapter to the other, then the whole of the stories would not have meaning and will make many people lose the interesting of reading. The key argument in this essay is that setting and flow of ideas dominates the significant of this collection of stories and makes it famous. In analyses and making support argument for this statement, I will make use of two stories from the book. First is the “Pacific Journal of Adam” and “half-lives” and I will interpret the two stories, in terms of the first section and second section, to reveal how setting and flow of ideas has been created by the author.

In the first section of the story Pacific journal of Adam Ewing, it begins with the journey of which start at Chatman and the destination to Hawaii. It is through this journey that many of the events on the second section unfolds. The whole of the novel lacks the traditional culture, and this means if the author has not incorporated the right setting, for the sections of the stories then, reflecting on how changes have happened to each character will be quite hard. The characteristic and traits of Ewing are built through the of South Wales from San Francisco and through the hard times, he is pictured as a naïve and hardworking, to meet the basic needs of his family. On the highland, of Chatman we view him in a different perspective and curiosity of the new environment can read form his eyes. Through different setting and geographical environment which Ewing goes through, his character changes. He changes from being a passive observer to real and active participant as seen from the second section of this story.

Also, the first section, of this story is acting as an introduction to the readers about Dr. Goose and Autua, who ends up spoiling each other. The two characters have been used by the author to develop the theme of reincarnation and deception. When, Ewing meets with Goose on the beach while doing his job and the two communicate, and it’s from the communication that we see, Dr. Goose, feels so bad that people didn’t view him as a real doctor and others are running his name. It through this interaction of the two that, Ewing comes to realize that his friend Goose, is deceptive and doesn’t mean what he says. The reality, which public us, concerning his profession is the truth and not what he talked while they first met on the beach. Through various instances, of the characters, e can see, how different themes are getting out very well. Autua, is opposite to Dr. Goose characteristics and can intermingle with the white people and seems very determined and focused about his life. Ewing tries to figure out how these two different people were able to be friends and how they copy together. However, tis in normal life circumstances Is hard by Mitchel makes it possible by putting the two characters into a similar setting and thus interacting together. Autua has great, and strong belief on Ewing who helped him to be a Prophetess. The connection between Autua and Ewing shows how the theme of Reincarnation will unfold on the other chapters and sections of the novel. There is foreshadowing in this chapter that as the chapter ends, we see the healthy of Ewing getting worse and this is connected to the habit of Goose who tries to break the good relation of Ewing and Autua, fearing that it may affect his medication activities.

Each part and section of the novel is unique in terms of structure and setting. In this section, it is written in journal form, and each entry has date descriptions are given to the activities of Ewing in each day. In the second section of the story, the description Ewing is continued based on the given setting of section one, and thus the parts are intertwined by setting which gives flow. Ewing becomes victim to the deception concepts of Dr. Goose and believes that he can treat the problems he has suffered. The claims of Goose, show that Ewing has an intestinal parasite and can be cured by the use of Vermicide which will kill the worms. However, according to Ewing, this is not helping him, but Goose is killing him slowly. The perception of Ewing starts to change after Rafael death and from the passages of Ewing, we can see it is true that he is seriously sick. In the first section of this story, we see the negative perception which Dr. Goose had on the Aboriginals, and this is second is witnessed when he says that the “the dominant have power over the weak,” and this statement makes Ewing willing and ready to support the aboriginal people. Through the setting made on Cape Nazareth gives an account of the future aboriginals.

The theory of Mr. Horrox on progress which is based on the ladder, give out the responsibility of the white people to help and uplift lower races like aboriginals. This can be possible when they pursued them to adopt practices and religion of the dominant race. This theory contracts the theme of reincarnation and the need to leave old and archaic ways of religion. The use of geographical area of Cape Nazareth is symbolic and helps to show how many missionaries settled in this area to convert the aboriginals into Christianity. The missionaries tried to achieve the theory by creating subcultures which were rhyming with white people. Dr. Goose is objecting the activities of missionaries and making foul comments which irritates Ewing “the weak are meat the strong do eat” (Mitchell, 503). The optimism which Ewing has us towards the end of the second section of the story, not only hold meaning to the lives of aboriginals but the entire stories in this novel. The thoughts and sentiments that all lives are connected through past and present by the experiences we go through while on earth. The last quote on this novel illustrates and illuminates on how life is shared through experiences which people in the same setting go through “your life amounted to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean! Yet what is any ocean but a multitude of drops” (Mitchell, 508)

The second story, “HALF LIVES” the first section is set in Buenas Yerbas which is a fictitious city in California. This setting of the section forms the basic for two characters who are Adam Ewing and Luisa Rey. The home for Ewing as spotted in the first story analyzed above San Francisco was once called, known as Yerbas BUENA before California became part of the entire united states. The term Yerbas Buena is historical and refer to herbs, and since we had missionaries in this area, they could cultivate them on near lands when they learned their use form the natives. This integration of the section based on the places and the characters form the flow of ideas and themes in the story. The interaction of missionary’s ad the society is seen through Luisa’s and Ewing. Through setting, themes are connected to each of the stories to the other; in the first, we have seen how the theme of reincarnation has been touched. However, in this section of the chapter, it is highly debated and detailed. In short, we can say the first story acts as the gutter to the deeper detailed theme in the other stories. Reincarnation gets full of developed characters in the section. Luisa who is utilized by the author in developing the theme knows the connection she has with Robert Frobisher and doesn’t like the point she was like him in the past. The connection between the two is developed by three factors; the birthmark, letters, and presence of Sixsmith. When Luisa goes through the letter of Robert, this reminds her of the memories and images of Ayrs’ which she can’t explain. Circumstance similarity is seen through, the willing of the two to be approved by their father but each has a different reason for the need. Luisa needs to be like her father whereas Frobisher just needs the attention from his dad. The birthmark which the two shares, is a connection of association, but Sixsmith has a strong connection on their relation.

Likewise, in first story deception is seen through Dr. Goose medication concepts and how he lures Ewing on his stomach problem. This theme is again prevalent in various level of this story; even it was started in the first section of the first story. We see, it now involving the organization like Seaboard incorporation. This organization has lied the people of Buenas Yerbas to believe that the reactor is and also the organization of the US government which is responsible for the reactor’s construction in the country. This company is run by the corrupt number of people, and the Sixsmith report should have tabled the weakness in this company, and this becomes a challenge to Luisa who needs to reveal the truth. The author has used the fact that the report is missing to show, fiction and plot. Characters have developed different ideas on finding the report, and according to Grimali, the report should be destroyed. Through the novel, the issue of the report keeps to intensify, and the location of the report keeps to change. This helps in building the plot and mapping of characters from the scene to the other.

The shifting scenes in this story, gives the reader, a better way to understand the plot. An example of this is the death of Sixsmith has three narrations. The last moment of Sixsmith is seen when him, reading the Frobisher’s letter and evaluating his plans of traveling. Secondly, the narration changes to the situation when Bill smoke is the hotel and ends killing Sixsmith, and the third narration is seen through Luisa who starts the narration in the next day and after getting the information about the death of Sixsmith and decides to visit the hotel.

In conclusion, the whole collection of short stories by Mitchell has employed setting and flow of ideas in the entire stories to connect their information. Through setting, the reader is updated on the areas at which the characters behaviors will unfold. Also, the themes are based on the setting description of different stories in the collection. Through the connection of ideas, the plot in each half lives correlates to the themes in the first story in this collection of Mitchell. To end, up the plot goes together with the setting of the story and themes of the story.
