The learning experience from the practicum period
The learning experience from the practicum period has been significant to me and my future role as a nurse educator. I learned a lot about my strengths and weakness areas that still need improvement. My strengths include good communication skills, good interpersonal relations, cultural humility, and flexibility. In my practice, I will deal with nursing students and patients from different locations and cultures. I can only achieve the best outcomes if I relate well to them. This is my area of strength, and I will carry it to practice. However, I need to improve on my patience skills. Sometimes, I lose patience when dealing with people or issues that seem problematic. As an educator, I will need to show patience with my students.
Throughout the program, I interacted with my fellow graduate students and learners from the practicum sites. I learned that students need a good learning environment to achieve academic goals and objectives. Students differ in terms of goals and preferred methods of learning. Therefore, an educator needs to be there for every student. To demonstrate that I care, I will handle every student individually to address their learning concerns and help them to achieve the best. I will be there for every student in my class.
In the future, I will seek a working environment that promotes learning for every student. This means that the employers should avail all learning materials, equipment, and conditions that every learner needs to succeed academically. I want an employer who prioritizes students’ and patients’ outcomes because, in such organizations, employees are given the tools they require to perform. Also, I will expect collaborative, and teamwork approaches from my peers to assist in making decisions that favour learning and care provision.
My goal is to reach the highest professional levels by being an expert in what I do. This MSN program will kickstart my practice in nursing education. My next plan is to get relevant certifications to practice as a nurse educator in my state and then consider doctorate studies later on. At the moment, I want to concentrate more on helping learners to achieve their dreams through teaching and research.
I had a lot to learn during the direct care practicum. The experience was different from the undergraduate practicum because this one was done virtually using a computer and the internet. The activities were completed online using virtual patients because of the Covid-19 guidelines.
