The Declaration of Independence

The declaration of independence addressed the fundamental issues that affected American society. By considering the context of the time that the Declaration of Independence was drafted, we can see its effects upon the members of the early American society and how they responded to the writing (Jefferson 4). When Thomas Jefferson was drafting the Declaration of Independence, he foresaw the coming of changes in America. One of the main issues Jefferson addressed was the freedom of religion. This was the primary idea that formed the foundation of republican society work, through the separation of state and church (Jefferson 5). Jefferson set the stage for freedom to offer everybody an equal opportunity to be whoever they wanted irrespective religion, creed or race (Jefferson 3). The other idea rooted in the Declaration of Independence is that people should not be subjected to a hierarchy that was the basis for a monarchial government. Jefferson felt that the English system of government was not the way humans should be treated and this is the primary reason why he wrote the Declaration against primogeniture and other types of special treatment for lords who ruled the colonies.

The Declaration of Independence encouraged the American Revolution because it protested against the harsh treatment that many Americans experienced because of the uncertain behavior of the English Monarchy (Jefferson 4). Many Americans started rioting; even though sometimes they ended in blood-shed. Many rich farmers and merchant understood that they could rationally rule their people, instead of using the sometimes arrogant and irrational measures of the British (Jefferson 4). These were the reactions of ordinary Americans, but the new congress discussed some of the issues addressed by Jefferson and the congress concluded that Jefferson’s criticisms of the king were too much. The concept of men being equal is the primary focus of the document, and thus it separated England and America in the late 18th century.
