Censorship is defined as, “The changing or the suppression/prohibition of speech/writing deemed subversive of the common good.” It is a means of capping free speech in society. The government is the only body that has legal backing for enforcing censorship among its citizens. The government holds the responsibility of ensuring that its citizens are protected from what they deem offensive, hurtful and harmful. In a means to achieve this, the government imposes censorship on information sources that are considered risky. Apart from the upholding of public welfare, governments limit free speech to protect private property for trade secrets and in ensuring that economic efficiency and fairness is achieved. Governments began censoring information sources following periods of public offence that posed a threat over the authorities. The impact of uncensored information on children resulted in a change in societal values.
Censorship works through various processes set up. These are applied to specific cases accordingly. One is the complete withholding of information from a particular group of people. This ensures that no data is leaked from the source of potentially harmful data. Another approach taken is the editing and fabrication of already released information. This is done to shift the light in which the citizens view the data. The edited works give information in a more positive light and a more agreeable manner. Moreover, the party in charge can as well prevent the creation of harmful information. These are the main ways in which censorship is applied to regulate or suppress the release of harmful or offensive content.

The wellbeing of the citizens is indispensable in measuring a governing body’s performance while in office. Barring of dissemination of speeches ridden with racist and sexist comments that will upset some members of the public is a means that the authorities use to avoid such occurrences. Cancerous material in cigarettes is not mentioned in adverts which instead portray a luxurious and seemingly exciting indulgence. Withholding of this information exposes customers to higher risk with an unfair advantage to the producers. Governments sometimes withhold necessary data from their citizens in a said bid to maintain calmness. The power they have over the media sometimes carves information to present the authorities in a favourable light to their electorate.
In conclusion, governments and non-governmental organizations take up censorship roles over information that concerns their parties. Censorship by the government is backed by constitutional law, and non-governmental bodies apply censorship through encouraging their members, setting up by-laws that ensure they stick to the set guidelines and creating an identity that interested members need to live up to. In whichever manner, censorship carries both advantages and disadvantages. It promotes public welfare, societal unity, economic efficiency and in some cases, misleads the people in decision making due to non-exclusive provision of information.
