SWOT Analysis: Reducing Fertility in Bangladesh
Introduction
For over five decades now, issues regarding high fertility and birth rates in Bangladesh has led to concerns over its population growth rate. Subsequently, the government of Bangladesh and other relevant bodies has been determined to reduce the country’s fertility rate. Several programs have been developed and implemented toward this course since then, and some of them have been exceedingly successful in achieving their objectives. A SWOT Analysis is an essential tool that can determine whether the program for reducing fertility in the country is valid. The analysis provides the program developers with information about its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, which are useful in making it successful.
Strengths
An effective program must have strengths to increase its efficiency and make it more competitive than others. Similarly, the plan to reduce fertility in Bangladesh had some strengths as well. First, the program offers information and education to households all over the country, which has significantly assisted in the need to reduce fertility rates. Additionally, the program has led to the availability of contraceptives to the families, which has increased their usage among men and women. It has also availed a wider variety of contraceptives that have been readily accepted by the people. The number of clinics that deal with family planning issues has increased as well. These strengths have made the program successful so far.
Weaknesses
A few weaknesses can be cited in the program that may limit its ability to reduce fertility in the country successfully. Although over 40,000 women participate as Family Welfare Assistants, this number is relatively small compared to the immense population who need the services they provide. Furthermore, past trails to reduce fertility in the region have indicated that some of the residents dislike the use of contraceptives, which impedes the plan’s objective to minimize fertility. The program has also led to a decrease in fertility in women and men through the use of the various family planning methods, which may become a potential problem in the future if there is a need to repopulate the country. These weaknesses can be addressed to make the program more effective in reducing fertility in the country.
Opportunities
The program still has numerous opportunities through which it can meet its main target. The developers of this program need to increase the number of Family Welfare Assistants so that they can access remote areas more effectively. They also need to consider adopting newer strategies to maintain the program for a more extended period to ensure that the fertility rate does not rise again. Furthermore, they need to evaluate the program to address the issues concerning the increase in the number of deaths from complicated pregnancy issues. The program should use these opportunities to make it more efficient.
Threats
The fertility reduction program faces a few threats that may hinder its progress. Primarily, the people in charge of the project have noted that the cost of maintaining the Family Welfare Assistants initiative is correspondingly high, which offers a challenge to increasing the number of participants. Additionally, the lack of newer strategies has led to reduced fertility in the country to slow down. Another threat to the program is the increase in the number of deaths resulting from pregnancy complications caused by diverted attention to the advancements in new contraceptive varieties. These threats need to be addressed so that the program can be successful.
Conclusion
The SWOT analysis is a useful tool in evaluating the effectiveness of any program. Making this program successful will ensure the health and economic risks associated with high fertility rates in the country. The residents will also benefit from the program’s education, which will ultimately elevate their living standards.
