Styles and Elements in “The Breathing Method”
In the short story “the breathing method”, Stephen uses literature styles to convey meaning and to spice up the story to the reader. King begins by describing a woman’s womb as an engine; silent when off, but its pace increases and becomes louder once turned on. He uses this to mean how the woman’s womb behave when she is just about to give birth. He further explains this scenario by comparing it with the roars of the wild animal to reflect the pain and the fear that comes with labour pains. Additional use of style is when McCarron says that an expectant woman not walking is like a footballer preparing for a match while sited. Here, he means that woman not walking or doing exercise during gestation is one who is not preparing for the delivery of her child. Choo-chooing is a style that shows the breathing method of McCarron (King, 1984).
Stephen King has used a variety of elements in his work to express McCarron’s tone of sadness and threatens. The elements used entails, symbolism, plotting, characterization and themes. Blood coloured light of the ambulance light symbolized the blood that was about to shed at the foot of Harriet white’s ornament (King, 1984). Moreover foreshadowing in the bad dream McCarron has been used to symbolize the death of Sandra. The plotting used in the story begins when Sandra Stansfield is pregnant, working at the big shop, then moves to the downtown village to work for a blind woman. Characterization in the story includes; kind, loving and caring doctor McCarron and the blind woman. Arrogant and rude Mrs Kelly and hardworking, fearful and proud Jane Smith are other characters used in the story (King, 1984). Use of Themes is another element applied in Stephen’s work. These themes include marriage; married women are proud of their pregnancy, while those pregnant outside marriages are ashamed. Abortion is countless women that get pregnant, outside stable relationships, commonly take as a customary thing since they cannot bear the shame.
Largely, Stephen king has used these styles and elements as an expression of the Narrator’s voice as he shares with the gentlemen about is experience with Sandra. The elements have highly subsidized to the beauty of the king’s work as they fully portray his message. Additionally, the elements have not only proved how the themes reflect on what is going on in society; they have also demonstrated the intelligence of McCarron. Likewise, the elements have provided a strong pillar in the use of styles as they have optimized the emphasis on what Stephen’s styles meant.
