Southern Apologetics
Southern Apologetics was a systematic defence tactic that defended the practice of slavery in the South. According to Loewen, the civil war arose due to slavery practices in the South. However, Loewen shows that some history books have shown that slavery is isolated and an obsolete historical aspect. Ideally, this does not do justice to the fact that the white supremacist tactics developed from slavery.
In showing how slavery was the central issue during the civil war, Loewen explains that when South Carolina seceded from the union, the politicians condemned the states that did not enforce the Fugitive Slave Act that allowed runaway slaves to be returned to the slave owners in the South. This Act shows that there was a group of Americans who supported the ownership of slaves in the South. These were the Southern Apologetics.
High school textbooks have portrayed many ideas about slavery, and most of the people would be surprised to learn that slaves played a critical role in the economy of the Northern States. The history textbooks show that the issue of slavery was evil in entire America, but it was limited in the South. The idea is not accurate because it was based on racism.
