Some Of The Bad Actions Since The Indian Act
Since the Indian Act was assented to in 1876, indigenous people have been impacted by their health. Some of the bad actions that happened were;
The people were dispossessed of their land and traditional foods that sustained them
they became more dependent on the government, and their levels of self-sufficiency were reduced, cultural practices and traditions were deemed illegal
they were moved into poorly constructed housing which did not have the tradition of extended family
children were placed in houses with insufficient heat, which bred tuberculosis, malnourishment, cold, homesickness
the Indian Act was gender-biased as it devalued women, even denying them rights and access to services
the health issues of indigenous people should never be viewed in isolation from the impact of social determinants. The imbalance between the health of non-indigenous people and indigenous ones should be addressed. It will require the participation of the federal government and those tasked to deliver the health services
