Social Problems
The social problem refers to any situation or conduct that affects many people in a given society. A society is defined as a group of people living within the same locality, such as a district or state, and share behavior patterns. The United States of America is comprised of a diversified society. In such a society that is differentiated in terms of religion, culture, race, gender, age, and region, social problems are prevalent. The major prevailing social problems in the United States of America are unemployment and racial discrimination.
Unemployment can be defined as a situation where individuals are employable but cannot secure jobs (Caggiano, Castelnuovo & Figueres 2017). The economic meltdown resulting from the negative effects of Corona Virus Disease 2019 has seen many citizens of the united states go for months without sustainable jobs. According to Macionis (2012), unemployment qualifies as a social problem since it hurts well being of members of society, causes numerous trouble, including the inability to meet daily needs. In the recent past, unemployment has led the United States of America government to take action against the rising levels of unemployment.
Racial discrimination is any treatment against individuals or groups of individuals based on their skin color, ethnicity, or origin (Best 2017). Protests have been ongoing across major cities in the united states of America and worldwide against the brutal treatment of the blacks in the hands of the police. Racial discrimination is a social problem because it affects many people, not only blacks but also of Spanish origin. Macionis (2012) argues that discrimination has led to public outcry against discrimination, hence a conversation around the issue.
Unemployment and racial discrimination are the most prevailing serious social problems because their effects are felt not only by the individual they affect, but they lead to a ripple effect whose consequences are felt by society.
