Short Story Format

Cinderella is a short story written by the Grimm brothers. The theme of the story is good versus evil and teaches us the importance of kindness to others. The story is about an unhappy young girl, Cinderella, who lived a long time ago. She was sad because her mother had died and she had to live with her stepmother and stepsisters, who were mean to her. When the king announces a dance for all beautiful ladies, the stepmother and sisters did not allow her to attend the party since she was dirty and had no nice clothes. “Thou hast no clothes and shoes, and yet wouldst dance!” (Grimm, 2011) This is related to the theme of good versus evil in that Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters are mean to her, but the little bird was always doing good to her by granting her wishes.

Rising action: The stepsisters prepare to go to the ball without Cinderella. After she has been left behind, Cinderella asks the white bird for a beautiful dress and beautiful shoes. She then goes to the party and is the most beautiful girl at the ball. This makes the prince want to dance with her. Cinderella, however, leaves hurriedly after the dance but leaves her shoe behind. He takes the shoe and says he will marry the girl who fits the shoe. “No one shall be my wife, but she whose foot this golden slipper fits” (Grimm, 2011). Here the good wins over evil because Cinderella is the one who gets to dance with the prince and not her evil sisters.

The climax happens where the shoe fits Cinderella after the stepsisters try to force it to fit without success “..and she put it into the slipper and it fitted like a glove” (Grimm, 2011). Cinderella, therefore, gets to be the one to marry the queen. Again, good wins over evil, as is in the theme of the story. Falling action: Cinderella marries the prince, and the resolution is the prince and Cinderella live happily after while her stepsisters go blind after a bird pecks off their eyes. “And thus, for their wickedness and falsehood, they were punished by blindness as long as they lived” (Grimm. 2011). Again the theme of good versus evil manifests where good wins over evil again.
