Sculptures
A sculpture is an artwork formed by manipulating plastic or hard materials to develop a three-dimensional object. Sculptures come in various designs. Some sculptures are reliefs on surfaces, personified in freestanding objects, or other different spaces like tableaux (Tola). Just like the other varieties of artwork, sculptures are installed in their distinct ways.
How the Historical sculpture is installed
The sculpture is singled in a glass case and positioned in a museum room. This strategy enhances the viewer’s focus on this piece of art. Additionally, appropriate lighting is done in the room where the sculpture has been installed. Extreme spotlights created help develop an aesthetic effect in a similar way that valued merchandise is exhibited in the stores, commonly known as boutique lighting (Siapkas and Sjögren 79). This exhibition strategy is closely associated with the cultural and commercial exchange whose origin goes back to the 19th century. This exhibition strategy enhances the impression that ancient sculpture should first be perceived as a fine art specimen. Additionally, specific colors are used in the room where the sculpture is placed. The choice of colors should accentuate the piece of art. The colors used help in the perception of ancient sculpture. For instance, the use of neutral colors creates a different impression when compared to a room that is darkly lit.
An ancient sculpture is installed differently from the archaeological artifact. In both cases, the curator is keen to develop a specific narrative around a piece of art. In most cases, the ancient sculpture already has a pre-existing narrative that the viewers are already aware of (Siapkas and Sjögren 80). The curator only works towards enhancing the features that help develop this narrative while they do away with elements that don’t quite fit the narrative. For this reason, the sculpture is considered a masterpiece and can thus be installed in isolation in a museum. The case, however, is different when displaying archaeological objects. Here, the object is displayed in the accompaniment of the other artifacts it was found to help create a narrative. In most cases, these are objects that it functioned with.
The installation of a historical sculpture contributes to how the audience perceives it. Its isolation in a glass vase and enhancement of its beauty, accompanied by such features as lighting and an appropriately colored room, help to equip it with an intrinsic meaning since its beauty is enhanced. The historical sculpture is appreciated as a timeless art (Siapkas and Sjögren). The meaning of the sculpture, however, is acquired when it is put on display. This is different from the case of an archaeological object. In this case, the meaning is understood through its association with a larger archaeological and historical context. Its accompaniment with the other objects it was found with thus helps in contextualizing its meaning.
In conclusion, a historical sculpture is installed differently from other pieces of art. It is installed in a glass vase in isolation, where its features are enhanced to create a narration. Conversely, an archaeological object, is installed alongside other artifacts to create meaning and develop a specific narration.
