Descriptive
Of all the short materials we have read in class, I think the most fascinating one is the play of Heroes and saints which had its world premiere on April fourth 1992 at Elteatro Mission of San Francisco; the play was produced by Brava; for females in the world of arts under the artistic direction of Ellen Gavin (Moraga). It is a play that takes place in the valleys of California where the Mexicans immigrants work as laborers of agriculture. In the field where the Mexicans work it consists of various poisonous pesticides. Besides, on the sheds that they call a home it is made up of waste which is very harmful for their health.
Moreover, the water they consume is full of pollution as it is polluted by different kind of harmful chemicals. However, the owners of the lands where the Mexicans work as laborers without favorable working conditions have aces to clean water, good shelter and health diet. The children and adults, especially among the Mexicans they suffer from cancer other diseases. The major subject matter that I concluded during the play is the link between the poverty and poor health, the link between the environment and public health, and cultural barriers
What I really saw in the performance of the parade is very different from my expectation. People being treated as slaves; in terms of being laborers with poor working and living conditions while there masters are well of with better health living in terms of food and water. I expected that the very few generous and humane masters who could see how the poor children of the laborers were suffering and there workers, they would extend a hand of help but to no avail thought the play. I find it so disappointing, because in every society there must at least one person who is concerned about the well-being of the poor people. The efforts of Cerezita are to no quality avail.The play demonstrates how intense agony that the poor Mexicans go through in the hands of the rich. Also, I expected the human rights agencies to intervene through the agony of the poor Mexicans and other government agencies to extend a hand of help, in terms of charity work to help the poor and innocent creatures.
From the start to the end of the play, it addresses the rich in the community ad ho the poor and the rich have a very different lifestyles. The rich are always the masters in a community while the poor are treated as slaves, which bring in the aspect of impacts of social class differences rather the outcomes of the gap that exists between the rich and the poor. The performance space is actual; it is suitable for conducting the play as it is performed in the valleys of California where the Mexicans immigrants work as laborers of agriculture. The Events is one of the best as it conveys what happens in the real world, in the world of poverty and riches.
Analytical
The play conveys the intended message in a clear way as per the exact subject matter without diverting from the theme. For instance, Cerezitas major aim in the play is to show visibility as she wants to attain the attention of the outside world, so that he Anglo world around them would be able to know about the poor and harsh conditions of the Chicano people. Besides, the crucification of children in the play is symbolic which conveys a message for resistance against the government and refer to transformation within the community. This are some of the pieces of evidences that the play conveyed the exact message it was intended to convey to the rich and the government as a whole. Every bit of the story was engaging to me as I wanted to be more informative about what happens after every episode.
Reflective
The play just reminded me of my past poor life; where I relate the play in my personal experience as a large scale rice employee where employees were expected not to take rest but to bend their backs down during the planting and harvesting season. If found doing the contrary, their wage would be cut off to compensate for a few minutes of rest. In case of sickness caused by the wet and cold weather, there is no medical insurance for the employees bearing in mind that the wages are too small to cater to medical bills. No protective attires were issued to the employees during the planting and harvesting season to protect against the harsh environment. However, finding an opportunity to tell the public about the maltreatment and inappropriate health care considerations was a nightmare due to the risk of losing the only job that brings food to the table, and public blackmailing made it difficult for your story to be heard.
The play was of great success in communicating the message to the current world. Through proper characters who fit in the play as a result of their potential in conveying clear message to the intended recipients. The play is very relevant as in the current world there are both poor and the rich and the play tries to teach the rich to be generous to the poor as they go through a lot trying to put food on the table.
Critical
I relate this play to the article “The Most Dangerous Job” (2001), by Eric Schlosser who claims that the most dangerous job is working in the slaughterhouse, especially being a worker at a meatpacking plant and cleaning in the United States of America. Workers from this field suffer massive injuries, illnesses, and poor remuneration due to poor management and lack of humanity
