The cite and release program puts across that those found in possession of four ounces or less of marijuana are cited, their fingerprints are taken. Also, marijuana in their possession is confiscated, and they are released. The law can come when marijuana use in the united states elicits debatable arguments from different quarters about the use of marijuana.
The advantages of cite and release programs can come to the user because it will not be an offense to carry less or four ounces of marijuana. People were prosecuted in the past. Still, it will be a reprieve to most users as they will not face prosecution. Another advantage can come as a reprieve to those held in jail who had previously been arrestest only for possession of marijuana less than four ounces. They can be released if they have no other violent offense.
The disadvantage is that there will be more use of marijuana, leading to drug abuse among young people. There can be the risk of racial profiling in offenders’ arrests, and it can deal a big blow to the campaign against drug abuse.
