Reshaping literacy in high poverty early childhood classroom: one teacher’s action research project.
Summary
In this article, the author discusses different risk factors that affect young children’s later success in the education system. The preschool teacher’s role is to preplan the program to help mediate the effects of the risk factors and build the necessary skills to develop a strong academic foundation for the children. The article concludes that restructuring the literary instructions for supporting students’ linguistics, culture, and strengths and including learners’ lives into school lives. For instance, quantitative analysis shows that students’ language increased when they participated in literacy proa gram, which majored in incorporating students’ backgrounds. The study’s major purpose was to evaluating participation in student’s literacy-linked activities had any effect on the student’s growth in language and literary skills. Further, it aimed at evaluating if parental participation is connected to parental attitudes about school. In concluding the research, the author states that it is important to understand that parents matter in preschools’ children’s education. Additionally, having Epstein’s framework will help structure a literacy curriculum beneficial to students and families. As stated in other research findings, more focus, cultivation and support should be on parents’ partnership with schools in ways such as parenting, communication in addition to learning at home. Additionally, addressing parent’s participation will greatly impact preschool student’s academic growth. It will motivate parents in desiring to participate in school activities.
Critique of literature review and theoretical frameworks
The literature review is well organized and serves its purpose. It defines and develops the research question on whether parental participation can impact preschool children’s education. The findings from the literature review confirm that parent’s interaction greatly impacts a child’s language development. Through the development of literary opportunities that involve parents will greatly impact a child’s development. It also impacts the children’s pre literary skills development like vocabulary and phonemic awareness. Further, it also identifies the right methods of data collection. For instance, in this study, the researchers use qualitative analysis by carrying out parent surveys, which helps gather to see the parental implication on students’ literacy abilities.
On the other hand, the literature review helps identify a gap in the other literature related to the problem and recommends what should be done. It identifies the gap in parental participation in the school system, where it recommends that schools and teachers adopt programs that increase parent’s interactions with students. Through designing structuring literacy opportunities that include parents will help in skill development in children. Additionally, when preschool teachers invite parents to discuss their child’s studies, they tend to make parents feel valued in school, hence their educational activities. Additionally, the literature review is effective for the study topic since it is of the recent origin of fewer than ten years. The literature review has information from secondary data, showing what other previous researchers have discovered on the same issue. There is the identification of the keywords used in conducting the research, which helps the readers in rightful interpretation of the information. An example of the keywords is early childhood, literacy, and language skills, parental engagement, and parental involvement. In this research, there is a theoretical framework; there is the identification of different concepts and the relationship between the concepts. For instance, the theoretical framework is studying concepts such as parental interaction and preschool children’s development.
Critique of the study design and methods
In this study on the reshaping of literature in high poverty early childhood classrooms, there is causal-comparative research. The research aims at establishing a cause-effect relationship between different variables, which are preschool children’s development and parent interactions. This is a study design that is almost the same as true experiments. In this case, there is an independent variable (parent interaction) identified but cannot be manipulated by the researcher. However, the effects of the independent variable on the dependent variable can be measured. The researcher can identify the effects of increased parent interaction in a school activity on preschool students’ skill development. In this case, the researcher does not just assign any group; instead, they use the naturally formed and preexisting groups, preschool students. Moreover, in this study, while analyzing and concluding the study, there is a careful cause and evaluation done since there could be both known and unknown factors that could affect the outcome. An example is where the research showed that parental interaction has an immersive impact on preschool students’ skill development.
In the study, there is qualitative research, which entails the collection and analysis of non-numeric data in understanding different concepts and opinions. There is a qualitative analysis of the impact of parent interaction on preschool student’s skill development. To gather relevant research data for the topic, the researchers used qualitative research methods such as observations, interviews, surveys, and focus groups. There is the use of observation qualitative research method where there was a continuous observation of students’ growth and proficiency after increasing parent interactions through teaching strategy gold. It helped track the student’s growth and proficiency. Through ongoing observations and in-class assessments, the researcher gathered and recorded data on 38 objectives in six different developmental areas in an online TSG system. Further, the author conducted observations on every child where they had 2 short and formal observations and 14 informal observations.
Critique of results and discussion
The results show that offering a classroom lending library improved the likelihood of parents reading at home with their students, increasing their likelihood of actively participating in their children’s skill development. How the outcome of the research is analyzed offers the well-researched results that parent participation in school activities has a significant effect on the student’s literacy skills in understanding the letter and sound relationship. The discussion clearly shows the correlation between a parent’s participation and a student’s language development. Further, there is no statistical significance in language and literacy skill growth with self-reported home reading levels.
In conclusion, through critical analysis, the article is trustworthy and unbiased. It is because it uses the right type of study design for examining dependent and independent variables. Further, qualitative analysis aids in the collection of non-numeric data that helps in getting the desired outcome. On the other hand, the study is relevant to data since it uses current literature reviews and theoretical framework. However, I would recommend that the sample selected for the study be increased so that the study results would be generalized.
