Personal reflection is important for learners to know where they are, what they have improved, and what can be improved more (Tsang 2009, 1). Going back to when I started the course, I was excited to learn about risk management as I am always motivated by learning and understanding the unknown. My experience with the course was interesting with many special moments. However, for this paper, I will explore two special moments and experiences that I was able to learn and gain important skills and knowledge that can be used to further my career as I become a professional.
The report development, writing, and presentation based on the Bubbly Brews Beverage Company (BBBC) case study was one of my best experiences. Looking back on the case on how to improve the company’s occupational health and safety program to provide better safety and health for the employees at the company (Reese 2016, 98). Throughout the report development and presentation section, I was able to apply my knowledge and skills to come up with a comprehensive and quality report. At the start of the assignment, I was struggling a little bit since I was not well conversant with what was required. I focused on seeking help from my lecturer, who was able to guide me through the process, and I owe much to him. I was able to read the case, and through in-depth research, I developed a good report. In the process, I also got feedback from my director and peers. From their feedback, that I took seriously, I was able to improve my presented draft report to a better report.
My peers were also an important part of the report development since with their ideas and samples; I was able to learn more on report writing. Apart from the writing, the presentation allowed me to gain communication and presentation skills (Green and Johnson 2006, 78) that I can say I did not have. Talking in front of an audience on something I have developed was interesting. I was nervous at first, but after a few seconds, I became composed, and the experience was important since I will be doing presentations for most parts of my career. Report writing and presentation is an important part of any profession and thus through the skills learnt in this assignment (Green and Johnson 2006, 74), I will be able to apply them in my professional field and even improve better. As I get work in other organizations or my own business, I will be able to develop reports better using the skills learnt in this assignment.
Another interesting moment I had in the course was researching the sources to be used and the development of the bibliography. Research is an essential part not only in academics and science but in most fields. The ability to conduct research on risk management and hazard identification improved my research skills. I selected ten studies from many studies that I had identified in searching for sources. Finding and selecting relevant sources to be used in research is not an easy process. Bibliography writing was one of my best assignments since it allowed me to search for various literature sources. I was able to find many, but I selected the best, and from the feedback from my peers and director, I did an excellent job. In my professional field, I will be doing a lot of research. Therefore, having developed skills in finding sources to be used in research, I believe that the skills developed would aid in the process.
Having gained skills and knowledge mainly on resource searching, carrying out research, and writing and presenting reports, I believe that I have been able to grow. Generally, there were many other issues learnt from the course. The course was interesting to me and through risk management issues leant, I can be able to conduct a risk assessment now and provide a report regarding the same to help in dealing with risk management.
