Puerto Ricans in the US
Moving from one culture to another may be hard for a person, especially one whose way of life does not match the place where they are moving. It calls for an absolute change of lifestyle, making it even harder to acclimatize to the new environment. In a video, The Puerto Ricans: Our American History, changing from the Puerto Rican Culture into the American way of life can be very demanding even for adults. In the end, one may not fit as well as they want, comparing to their previous culture. This paper analyzes the film The Puerto Ricans: Our American Story and the issues that it addresses both ina positive and a negative way.
The first issue is being unable to fit into the community. In the Video, fitting into American culture, especially when one is from Puerto Rica, is like skipping two ropes heading in different directions. The illustration shows that the two cultures are very different, with each having a very different ethical, behavioral, and lifestyle course. The issue makes it hard for one to detach from the Puerto Rican culture emotionally.
The advantage of moving into the United States is that careers in the state are well paying. It makes it easy for one to shift from their career life in Puerto Rica to that of the United States, as stated by Fernandez, a participant in the Olympics. It is also easier for one to pursue their career while in the United States. An example is when Fernandez said that the only way one would win was on the American Side.
The cost of living in the United States is higher than that of Puerto Rica. One needs to make a lot of income f they are to survive in the United States compared to when they are living in Puerto Rica. The quality of life in the United States is, however, higher than that of Puerto Rica.
