The video “Prisoners- (Mentally Disturbed)” presents the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility for the most severe criminals and the mentally disturbed, located in Indiana cornfields, America. The reporter presents the challenges of running a correctional facility where many of the inmates are mentally challenged. The multi-security level security facility was opened in 1990 located on a piece of land over 500 acres. It houses all types of inmates including maximum security, medium security, and minimum security. The mentally ill who have been approved by psychiatrists of having the illness are usually highly guarded and put into solitary segregations; to ensure that the members of staff and the other inmates are safe.
There are several staff members employed at the facility to ensure that everything is running smoothly. The prison wardens describe that courage is an essential element since some of the inmates usually become violent and assault the staff and other inmates. There are also five psychologists who are tasked with the work of counseling the inmates. Impromptu searches are as well done by the staff to capture any contraband that may have been used by inmates to make weapons.
There are various challenges in prison and, different outlines have been set up to counter with them. An instance is where the inmates are taken to the residential treatment unit (RTU) so that they can be trained to integrate with the general populations. The RTU helps the mentally disturbed inmates to live a relatively balanced life. Medications are also administered to help them control the psychological disorders. They are also offered lessons such as literature to help deal with the boredom of being confined in the prisons for a long time. A drug rehabilitation program has been established to help deal with those who are affected by drug addiction.
