Risk and protective measures should fit certain criteria to provide the best results in dealing with Omaha’s substance abuse. The preventive measure set should include raising awareness to the community members of how serious the situation is and how many people suffer from substance abuse in the area. The drug and substance education program should not make any participants uncomfortable in its implementation. They should feel safe to participate, and the end goal should be achieved.
The Nebraska Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention and Education Programs are programs in Nebraska that aim to teach substance and drug abuse to youths and adults. This program aims to help youth and teenagers make the right decision when it comes to drinking alcohol and abusing drugs. In Omaha and the United States, in general, Teen binge drinking is a major issue. That is why this program was initiated to help teenagers understand the dangers of binge drinking. The program believes that early intervention is the most efficient way to help an abuser get the help they need and even prevent any addiction issues. This program is essential to the Nebraska community because it gives a chance to help an addict in their early stages before the drugs fully consume them, and it’s difficult to convince them to get help.
Nebraska’s readiness to embrace the program was minimal, but with much effort, that can change. For this program to be implemented effectively, we need to start with community awareness initiatives; these include handing out flyers, putting up posters, advertising in local stations, and online websites. The program should create an open, non-judgmental environment where everyone is welcome to learn and share their experiences regardless of age, gender, race, or how long they’ve been addicts or whatever drug they abuse.
Omaha statistics on drug and substance abusers are alarming; about 66.2% of the population have or are currently using marijuana, while 22.5% are abusing cocaine,3.4% are on heroin, and 14% are using Meth. Substance and drug abuse affect the body negatively. Some of these effects include drug addiction, some unintentionally overdose leading to death, most drug abusers are involved in domestic violence cases, the abuser’s appetite is also affected, leading to weight loss, and a few health-related issues like lung diseases for smokers. There are many risk factors regarding drug abuse; they include a lack of parental supervision for teenagers, substance abuse, and drug availability.
The program’s strategies on how to achieve its goals include inviting experts on drug abuse to come to teach and correct some myths and misconceptions held by any of the participants, invite substance abuse survivors who have turned their lives around and are enjoying sobriety to come and motivate the audience and inspire them to seek help too. The expected outcomes of initiating and implementing this program are reaching more youths and teens at their early stage and help them deal with addiction issues, get addicts to seek help by enrolling in rehabilitation centers, and making more teenagers aware of the dangers of binge drinking so that they can be able to make the right decisions with regards to drinking and drug abuse.
The program is keen to involve and respect every aspect of the community. We will ensure that the teaching techniques, the activities carried out and the policies implemented are culturally sensitive are formulated in such a manner that make them sustainable for a long time because the substance and drug abuse is not a short-term issue that can be solved in the first try.
