President Franklin Roosevelt issued an er order in 1942, which put across certain areas in the United States to be military zones and restrict access to those areas. The President’s order came after the Japanese military attacked pearl harbor, and there was concern that Japanese Americans might pose a threat to the national security under the executive order. Japanese families were taken to internment camps. This affected them because they had to sell their homes and businesses for much less of their worth. This led to the Japanese losing much of what they had accrued. They also faced racism based on public perception and hysteria.
The order was fair to the Americans but unfair to the Japanese Americans because it infringed the basic fundamental rights and freedoms of the Japanese Americans. It was deemed a setback by the government side to upheld those rights and freedoms. The fear of the unknown pushed the American government and people to take the Japanese Americans to camps.
The order contradicted American justice, as we can see in the case of Korematsu V United States. Fred Korematsu was a Japanese-American man who decided to stay in California instead of obeying Executive Order 9066 and going to the internment camps; he knowingly violated the Executive Order. He argued that the order was unconstitutional and violated the Fifth amendments of the United States constitution. He was convicted, but there was no question raised about the extent of his loyalty to the United States. Justice Hugo Black ruled that Korematsu was not excluded from the military areas because of hostility to him. Still, he was excluded because the country was at war with the Japanese empire and the military feared invasion, therefore, needing to put in place tight security measures.
