Practice College Essay

Introduction

The nursing profession looks at the need to provide care for patients and communities to ensure the attainment and maintenance of adequate health. Nurses are engaged in the provision of care for patients, as this is their main role. For one to become a nurse, there are various reasons they may decide to pursue it, such as the desire to be associated with a group of professions, monetary benefits, passion, etc. In this regard, people have different reasons. As a result, I will be providing personal reasons that are made to pursue the nursing profession.

Reasons for Becoming a Nurse

I have always had the desire to become a nurse from childhood. Being one to look after my aunt, who had an aggressive battle with colon cancer, watching doctors and nurses trying to save her life, and provide care in every stage of her condition was an inspiration to me. It showed me the need to help those who are in need. In this regard, I will be providing care to patients, as this will ensure satisfaction, as there is no greater feeling for an individual to help other people. As a healthcare provider, I feel that my first strength is to help others who have a condition. A nurse should always ensure an improvement in his or her patients’ health. They need to become second and put their interest away when providing healthcare services to the population (Traynor, 2016). Also, a nurse needs to be friendly and outgoing as I saw this trait with the nurses who care for my aunt. I always like being around people and solve their problems. Pursuing nursing will, thus, be an opportunity to provide care for those who are in need. Through the experience I gained when I saw doctors and nurses providing care for my aunt, I gained prerequisite knowledge and information on the importance of caring and feeling for those who are suffering. It is an experience that has changed my life forever.

There are various areas in the profession that I may decide to specialize in, or there are plenty of opportunities for one to specialize in. There are provisions of opportunities for obtaining a degree in nursing in the United States and worldwide. The care provider will give basic nursing care to patients while also seeking to advance their education in the future where I will be looking to pursue masters, as this will imply that I will be moving to a higher-level role. Further, I feel that nursing has more options than other professions. I can be involved in caring for older adults, children, work in healthcare centers or community settings. There are endless opportunities provided to one who has pursued nursing, and I am fascinated by the fact that all nurses are compared to other healthcare providers (Bombino & Williams, 2020).

Various nursing areas contribute to the profession’s uniqueness because of the presence of multiple paths for one to pursue. There has been an idea that nursing is just a basic profession, which is not true, as there are various fields that one may decide to pursue. Because of the experience that I saw with my aunt, I will have to concentrate on providing healthcare services for critically ill patients, as her memory will ensure that I am involved in the provision of adequate care for my patients. I understand what they will be going through, as I saw it with my aunt. During the provision of care to my aunt, I liked how the doctors and nurses were provided intensive care and all their efforts to save her life. The second area that I may be concentrating on is anesthesiology, which has helped patients relieve them from severe pain. I saw anesthesia being used with my aunt, as it was the only way to save her from severe pain and suffering after surgery. Since then, I have always been interested in learning more about the process. With the chance to pursue nursing, I will be able to specialize in the area.

One may decide to pursue a course to get a good job in the future. As such, nursing will create a high earning potential for me in the future, as the healthcare providers can ensure the provision of an excellent source of income for an individual. It requires at least an associate degree in nursing for one to start reaching his/her potential. In the future, I will be planning to advance my level of education to ensure that I get an excellent salary. The United States provides the Bureau of Labor Statistics, known as BLS that a basic nurse can get 45,030 dollars. An associate degree in nursing will have a significant increase in the earning of an individual. The registered nurses (RN) can also earn a median salary of seventy thousand dollars as provided by BLS. Thus, I have started my journey of becoming one, as I believe in the future, it will be a rewarding career. Because of the opportunities, nursing has become one of the leading respected professions in the United States and worldwide (Ranjbar et al., 2017). In 2019, it was ranked the most trusted profession because of its ability to promote ethical practices and honesty. The ethical values of nurses are high. Currently, they form a significant number of the healthcare workforce where there are more than three million nurses because people consider it a respected profession that provides opportunities. The public also considers nurses as compassionate healers, as they are always working tirelessly to improve patients’ health. It is one of the reasons why I want to be associated with this profession.

When working as a nurse, there is flexibility offered to healthcare workers. I believe that this will be important in the future when I decide to go for masters. It is because there are flexible schedules and shift selection for employees, which may have attracted me. Depending on the area when one specializes in, there will be fluctuation of the shift lengths based on a healthcare worker’s needs. For instance, one reporting for noon duty can carry his or her activities in the morning. Besides, an individual may work for an extended period and get time to be with the family or pursue other goals during free time.

Lastly, there has been an increased lifestyle condition affecting our population. It is a problem that affects populations worldwide. It is projected that the trend will continue to exist with an increasing number of baby boomers, who are vulnerable to lifestyle conditions. Because of my need to help others, I will be interacting with this group in the future. Lifestyle conditions like diabetes, cancers, hypertension, heart diseases, overweight, etc., are a significant challenge for our healthcare system (Arakelian et al., 2019). The problem is further worsened with the inadequate number of healthcare workers. In this regard, I have to be involved in providing adequate healthcare services for this population by promoting healthcare education to prevent the conditions (Ross & Kerrigan, 2019).

Conclusion

In summary, I have provided various reasons that made me choose the nursing profession. However, the primary reason for this is the desire to help others, as I have been inspired by the healthcare providers involved in providing care for my sick aunt, who was suffering from colon cancer. The efforts made by doctors and nurses to improve her health was a turning point for my life, as I saw nursing is not just a profession but a call. I will be working tirelessly to help critically ill patients.
