The Hate U Give novel is a moral young adult novel narrated by Starr Cartel, a young 16 years girl living in a poor neighbourhood, she joins an elite private school which is a white-dominated. The book was published in 2017 by Harper Collins and reprinted by Balzer and Bray. The book won the right of a novel bidding war and created a commercial success and debuting to the first New York Time’s bestseller list of the young adult. The Hate U Give evaluate how society portrays stereotypic to the black people to justify the racism and violence toward black thus perpetuating discrimination at Starr’s school. The novel poses a genre presented in the Children’s Literature in that it expresses the children’s point of view, many of its characters are young adult, and it includes childhood actions, happenings, and events. Additionally, the play has a tone of innocence and hope, and it is written for adult where it is adopted by children as portrayed in Children’s Literature.
The primary source of hatred in the novel is racism and prejudice. The play comprises of many figurative languages, Khalil’s hairbrush has been used as symbols to portray the distrust of police officers to the minorities. While demonstrating, the protestor’s chants “A hairbrush is not a gun” Is a symbol of anger in the hearts of the African- American community when unarmed Khalil is shot dead based on incompetence information. Black Jesus represents the strength exercised by African- American in the aspect of oppression. In the novel, Starr uses the simile, “it seriously looks like the circus is setting up in town,” to echo the national attention on the shoot of unarmed Khalil. Additionally, Starr uses a simile, “it sounds like the Fourth of July behind us: pop after pop after pop,” to compare the fourth of July with chains of violence and riots following the killing of unarmed Khalil by coup 115.
The novel, The Hate U Give has similar narrative beats with To Kill a Mockingbird. Both novels come to a climax of a miscarriage of justice that results from inheritance of racism in African – American society. However, the two novels differ from their narrators. The character in To Kills a Mockingbird only sight the racism around them when Atticus stands to defend Robinson, the black man falsely accused of rape while the characters in The Hate U Give faces series of racism in the entire play. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, there is no personal involvement. Later in the novel, it is portrayed that Atticus was not a hero, but he was on his line of duty. On the other hand, The Hate U Give hero Starr stands as a witness in the court case on the death of her friend. The theme in the novel The Hate U Give is identity while in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is a coexistence of Good and Evil.
The play uses academic literacies like psychoanalysis when it explores the life of a young Starr, whose life changes after witnessing the killing of her unarmed friend by the police officer. The media dramatizes the death of Khalil and accuses him of the been drug dealer. The feminism is portrayed when the mother of Starr work as nurse and Carlos serves as a police officer in a male-dominated society. At the same time, these jobs are linked with gender role in a man dominated society. Traditionally, women are viewed to be caring and nurturing, and this stereotype dies off when Starr’s half-brother has always standing ton protect his sister. The play’s title involves the use of the word “THUG” to describe Brown and other black characters how have faced the bullets of law enforcement with bringing deconstructive framework.
