Assignment 1
Indeed, the readings provide some negative aspects about local government fragmentation. They argue that many local governments can reduce a region’s economic progress due to competing interests in taxation and land use. Local governments prevent collaboration in the provision of essential services in some areas. Despite this, the United States is significantly diverse, and communities require governments that address their needs directly. Centralized structures make it challenging for underserved communities to receive much-needed services. For example, the state may concentrate on some areas and neglect others are critical to small groups. Therefore, fragmentation helps to create local government that understand unique community needs and meet them. For example, a region with 123 public school districts provides many options for parents. They do not have to send their children to affordable schools that are far from their location because of fewer public school districts. Some states also have home rules that allow local governments to regulate activities and enact some procedures to protect the people. Local authorities may use legal measures to enhance affordable housing and other social justice elements.
Assignment 2
I agree with the opinion that communities grow stronger with local government since they attend to specific needs. State governments often work with limited budgets, and may often concentrate on popular projects that generate income or benefit growth in some way. Hence, underserved communities may remain forgotten when they are not a significant part of the state’s agenda. Hence, I agree with the opinion that communities benefit with the presence of local governments. Individuals have more choices when they are dependent on local governments that enhance service provision. I must also acknowledge that local governments can split America when they are run inefficiently. In my opinion, this unjustness in local governments can be evaded with more collaboration.
