The Listening Script

The following script describes a conversation between an insurance broker and a lady who requires insurance services. The script can be recorded and played at any given time. (A black woman of a medium age enters the Simpson’s Insurance company offices)

Simon: (cheerfully)Good morning madam?

Woman: Good morning to you.

Simon: I am Simon, the director of Simpson’s Insurance company. How can I help you?

Woman:  I am from the Bellevue Street and I just migrated to this week in the last few weeks. I just managed to get a flat across the road on Monday. I am planning to move my things the day after tomorrow but I don’t possess an insurance cover for my property yet. I will appreciate if you give me the quotations for car insurances, and if it is possible you offer me a great deal. My car’s insurance cover is almost expiring in the next month.

Simon: Ok. That is not a big deal. Let me note some of your personal details then we can proceed dear customer.

Woman: No problem. I will appreciate if I get the assistance in the least time possible. I am Mrs. Veronica Williams.

Simon: Alright. That is veronica without a “H” at the end, isn’t it?

Woman: You are right Mr. Simon.

Simon: Please give me the address of the flat were you are moving to dear.

Woman: Its flat no 25, Riverside,36 Arthur Road. Kingston.

Simon: Can you assist me in spelling Kingston please Mrs. Williams?

Woman: It is simple Mr. Simon. Kingston’s spelling is K-I-N-G-S-T-O-N. Can I repeat the spellings?

Simon: No I am alright. If you have an email you can as well as give it to me so that I can forward the quotations for you to go and analyze them. The quotations brochure has the number which you can use to get more information that you require.

Summary and focus of the lesson: The lesson focuses on effectively listening to an audio script and responding to the availed questions. The lesson will include several teaching methods. The teaching methods will include brainstorming, discussions and questions and then answering of the questions.
Factors of the classroom and the students: The classroom has special audio systems. Moreover, it  is spacious and can accommodate learning even for those students with special needs.
Learning objectives: The learners should be able to achieve the following by the end of the lesson:

Listen to the script effectively.

Appreciate the importance of effective listening.

Apply the knowledge of script learning in real world problems.

Resources and materials: Textbooks, audio system, charts and hearing aids will be used.
Student grouping: .The students will be grouped into five groups appropriately.

Conclusion: The teacher asks questions based on the script per group.

Pre-Listening Stage

The teacher will discuss the basic concepts of listening scripts using the projector. Learners with hearing problems will be provided with hearing aids.  The learners will be organized in groups of 6 students and be provided with a mini audio system.

Listening Stage

During the listening stage, students will be grouped into groups of six students and then be provided with the audio system. Each group will categorically listen to the audio. The students will take notes during this stage. The main question during this stage will be to identify critical information about insurances.

Post Listening Activities

After the listening scenario. The students will resume to their seats and answer some questions that that teacher will have prepared. The teacher will then assign students with individual assignments concerned with listening of scripts.
