Identifying a Career: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
- Professional organizations linked to counseling
The largest professional organization for counselors in the United States is the American Counseling Association or ACA, and it offers membership benefits such as professional development, information in the form of newsletters and magazines, updated information and opinions in the form of forums (ACA, 2023). Another is the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), which provides certification services to counselors and other materials for the enhancement of professional practice. For example, the American Mental Health Counselors Association is exclusively affiliated with mental health counselors and provides information and representation for its members. The Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) is another organization focused on improving counselor education and supervision, offering crucial tools for the recognized counselor training and oversight profession.
- Journals that cater to the trained and licensed professional counselors
LPCs have several credible scholarly journals that are instrumental in offering information and research findings about the profession. The ACA’s flagship publication is the Journal of Counseling & Development, which presents research and practice essays related to all specialties within the counseling field. The NBCC’s official journal is TPC: The Professional Counselor, and it addresses various concerns related to professional counseling. This is a professional journal published by the AMHCA, covering information on Mental Health Counseling (AMHCA, 2022). ACES publishes the journal called Counselor Education and Supervision, which focuses on research and practice articles related to counseling education and supervision. Finally, the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development focuses on important multicultural and diversity concerns in counseling. It is useful for providing a complete and comprehensive perspective on counseling professionals in diverse communities.
- Where Job Openings in Counseling Can Be Sought
Positions for LPCs can be advertised in different places and by different entities. One useful source is the official website of the American Counseling Association (ACA), which features vacancies for counselors throughout the United States and information about the ACA Career Center (ACA, 2024). The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) also provides a job posting board for certified counselors. However, generalized job search platforms such as Indeed and Glass Door have a diverse listing of the available counseling vacancies accompanied by employer reviews and salaries offered. There are many other popular platforms where numerous organizations share counseling job vacancies and where people can make professional connections, such as LinkedIn. Newspapers and journals often contain advertisements for vacancies in the local and state administration, schools, and public health services.
