Overview
Chantaje is a song by Shakira, a Columbian singer, with featuring vocals from a fellow Columbian singer, Maluma. The song was produced by Ace Entertainment and was released on 28 October 2016. In anticipation of Shakira’s eleventh album, El Dorado, Chantaje was released as a single. Five people wrote the song; Joel Antonio Lopez, Maluma, Shakira, Bryan Snaider Lezcano, and KivenMauricio Jimenez. The song is a reggaeton and a pop song. Its background has tropical synths. Chantaje, based on its lyrics, was considered a ‘’battle of the sexes’’ because of the context. The main protagonist is not aware of her position with his lover, and she does not clear things up. The video was directed by Jaume de Laiguana in collaboration with Shakira, and it was shot in Barcelona, Spain. Commercially, the song became a hit, topping the US Billboard Latin Songs chart, Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala, and Uruguay. In fact, in the US, it became one of the most successful Latin singles of the decade. More so, in ten countries, it is certified higher or platinum; for example, Mexico, Diamond in France, and the US. It was nominated during the 18th Latin Grammy Awards as the Best Urban Fusion Performance and the Song of the Year as well as the Record of the Year. Furthermore, the song became an instant hit and success; in 19 days, its music video earned 100 million views. It broke Shakira’s previous record that reached that number of views in 21 days; it became the first song written and performed in Spanish to do so. Maluma considered it an opportunity to work with Shakira as he confessed to the BillBoard that ‘’he couldn’t miss the opportunity to work with Shakira again’’. This was after he had previously worked with her as a guest vocal for Carlos Vives, which was a remix.
