Inquiry Chart-HIST/MASC 4331 Mexican American Civil Rights

Author Martinez chapt. 1 Martinez chapt. 2 Martinez chapt. 3
Briefly describe what the readings are about.

This chapter is describing how Mexicans were trying to fight for justice and bring lynching to an end. It describes the extent of extrajudicial killings of Mexicans, yet no one is held responsible. The affected cannot report their grievances for fear of exposing themselves and their families. The chapter describes how Mexicans tried several avenues for justice. Their efforts were in vain as the state ignored their protests and claims, while inhumanity continued.
What is (are) the author(s) main arguments

The author points out that justice was selective, and the government of the day did not consider the cries of the oppressed Mexicans. Martinez argues that Mexicans had to act by themselves to counter the increasing injustice aimed at them. The author argues that the judges failed to deliver justice to the Mexicans.
Name two ways the author(s) linked the topics, issues & events they discussed to civil rights, citizenship, equality, and social justice?

Those who killed Rodríguez claimed to be a way of finding justice, just like in the topic “Divine Retribution.”

The event led to protests of Mexicans seeking justice and punishment of those perpetrating lynching.

The author narrated how people died in silence because of inequality.

Secondly, the author describes a great-granddaughter rose from silence nearly a century later to fight for her great grandfather’s justice.

First, by bringing out the massacre and later failure by the courts to judge those responsible, it showed the extent of inequality and violation of social justice.

Secondly, she mentioned the raid on Mexicans’ ranches, which resulted in 25 people’s killing. On reporting the matter, the authority manipulated and mistake vested on the victims.

New insights/knowledge you gained from the readings.

After reading, I have known where the hostility between America and Mexico began.

What I didn’t understand or questions I would ask the author(s)

I would like to know if those seeking justice of their great grandparents have made any progress. Another thing
