Influence of Nurse’s Role on legislative Process
Due to the changing and developing health system, and nurses playing pivotal role in the system, this calls for nurses to be involved in health policies development and formulation rather than implementation. Through acquiring policy making skills enables them to be in control of their practice. Nurses’ influence on bills going through legislative process for the laws to be amendent protects the quality of health care by access to opportunities and resources. Nurses using their professional skills, the values, experience and the advocacy skills have valuable views which influence the heath policies during legislative process.to avoid complexity in the health system the nurses should be involved in the legislative process to pass the bills and advocate for the policies which are in line with the nursing field. Additionally the leaders in the field of nursing should advocate for the laws which increases the number of nurses and supports the current technology
Parts of Law Making process Nurses Involved in Passing the Bill
Legislative process involves drafting bill and passage of those bills. During the time of drafting and passage of those bills different professionals have certain influence according to their area of specialization. In law making process nurses are privileged to have an opportunity to influence in quite number of parts. In the introduction stage nurses’ influences take part in lawmaking by requesting the associates to support the bill. During the hearing stage nurses can submit authentication in written form expressing their opinions, expressing the background of matter and also regulating the impacts that constitutes the nursing role in the legislative process (Moore, Kabbe, Gibson, & Letvak,2020). Lastly nurses influences by proposing changes and amendments to the law during the mark up stage before its endorsement.
Two Ways in which Influence can take place
A nurse influences the legislative process through the two ways. First, through Advocating to the community. Advocacy will involve addressing the social factors that shapes the population health mostly the disadvantaged individuals and the poor. Also considering policies which aim at improving the social and economic illness of the people. Nurses offer a link between them and law makers through advocating to the community hence influencing the heath policies (Moore et, al, 2020). Also by attending the direct legislative arena is another way through which the nurse influences the health policy making process. Direct legislative arena is where by the leaders attends the arena and raise the views and policies affecting the social and economic status of individuals in the nursing profession .The two ways play a pivotal role in influencing the legislative process on law making by nurses.
Advocacy as the Preferred Choice
I will choose advocacy on the nurses’ role on influence of the legislative process. The reason behind this is because advocating involves clarification of the key issues and refinement of the opinions by the nursing community .hence representing the interest of the majority and eliminating interest of individuals evident in the legislative arena.
Social Determinants of Health
Social determinants of health are the circumstances in the environment where people live, are born, worship, play, learn and its influences to healthiness. The circumstances such as economic physical and social in the various settings and environment may include; churches, neighborhood, workplace and school. The social determinant comprises of, public safety, social norms and altitude, health care resources access, availing of community based resources, literacy and the culture (Thornton & Persaud, 2018). The only determinant which affects and influences the nurses’ role in the legislative process, from the above list is the social norms and altitude.
Health policy making process is affected by social determinant of health one being social norms and altitude. Health policies are regarded as ineffective if the social norms and altitude of community not reflected. In both societal expectation and formal law social norms are expressed on nurses’ role on influence of legislative process composition. Making health policies to be formulated on the basis of people’s altitudes and social norms. Nurses through advocating influences the legislative process making legislated laws which fall within social norms thus social determinants determining how nurses influences a bill which is given.
Role Nurses Play in Promoting Health Status in Policy Changes
The roles of nurses in promoting the health status may include, through direct policing, this changes affects social norm as the determining factor of health. Nurses’ plays pivotal role in increasing control and improving the health of individuals .with the education and the experience they have in the nursing field they have is useful in the legislative process in passing bills and policies. Social norms are protected through nurse’s power over health policy. When nurses advocates for a bill via congress they solve communities problematic behavior, thus affecting positively social norm as the determinant of health by nurses role on influence of legislative process (Liske & Osborne, 2017). On proposing a bill against female genital mutilation (FGM) social norms represents the custody behavior and some communities may feel betrayal while other communities feel the law as affecting social norms positively.
Conclusively nurses play a significant role in legislative practice, through passing bills and advocating for laws and policies which are in line with their profession. Leaders in nursing profession should back up the influencing laws and policies which aim at increasing the number of nurses in field off nursing. Furthermore technology being essential laws which supports technology in nursing should be highly encouraged. Lastly all the policies relating to the field of nursing profession the nurses should be aware of them.
