Social media is vast growing. Social media use among youth is becoming popular day by day. Most youths use most of their time on social media. Social media, as much as it is popular, has a huge impact on the youth in higher learning institutions.
The first impact is on their friendships. Social media provides a huge space for interactions. Within these interactions, friendships are made or broken. When youths use different social media platforms, they meet a lot of peers. They interact and know a lot about each other. However, some get to know the real truth about some of their real friends which may affect their friendships.
Social media has created self-awareness among the youth. Social media is an open space for everybody to share their ideas. As youths interact with their peers, they share a lot of ideas on certain topics which help them understand themselves better. Also, they see get to see different points of view on certain things.
Esteem issues are on the rise due to social media. This is brought by the effect of social comparison. “Social media influencer” portrays a certain image which makes the youth feel low. Consequently, this undermines their esteem and they feel like they have to set a certain standard to be accepted.
Social media has led to a rise in depression cases among the youth. As they use social media, the youths interact with a lot of people. They have role models who pose a certain lifestyle. As young as they are they want to manage the same lifestyle knowing very well that they can’t manage it. this causes a lot of pressure which in turn leads them to depression.
Negative exposure has led to the rise of dangerous vices. One of them is drug substance use. Through social media, drug dealers interact with the youth and convince them to buy or be peddlers. This promotes the use of the same. Furthermore, youths are exposed to crime. Other than drug abuse, get connected to other crimes like theft. Some gangs form groups where they talk about their plans. Negative exposure is leading the youth to do dangerous things which pose a great problem both to them and society.
Addiction is also a major impact of social media. The youths are getting too attached to social media such that it is hard to leave that for anything else. The first thing most youths use first when they wake up is their phones or laptops. This creates a certain urge to continue using them especially when they find something interesting in the media.
Social media is a great tool for communication among youths. However, its negative and positive impacts are seen among the youth.

Interpersonal communication is communication between two or more people. Through this type of communication, students are able to share ideas among themselves. This helps students in their assignments and social life. Interpersonal communication also helps students open up their issues to trusted peers.
Group communication
This is communication among a group of people. Group communication helps students have a lot of perspectives on certain matters. It also boosts their social life.

Non-verbal communication is using other ways other than your voice to convey a certain message. Non-verbal communication is important in that it makes it possible for one to judge your communication without you talking.
Examples of non-verbal communication are:
- Olfactics: this is communication through the sense of smell. A person can judge something using the smell.
- Artifact: this is communication through the arrangement of material things.
- Proxemics: this is communication through spaces and distances. How close someone is to somebody or something shows how comfortable or alert they are.
- Chronemics: it is communication through the use of time. How one uses time shows how they value time or are conscious of time.
- Haptics: this communication through touch. How a person touches something or someone shows their intentions.
- Kinesics: this is communication through posture, body orientation, gestures, eye contact, and facial expression. It displays important clues and conveys a lot of emotions.
