HCO’s diversity changes
DR.AKO
Thank you, Dr.Ako, for pointing out that indeed the situation I stated creates more racism and frankly kills the morale of the HCO employees who aren’t Hispanic. This goes against the essence of diversity, which should be a representation that ultimately brings everyone together for the greater good. After going through my notes, I believe diversity amongst an HCO should be implemented regardless of which community the HCO is located. The HCO community is located in shouldn’t dictate how the face of the HCO employees looks like because, just like you pointed out, it will create more racism. However, Dr.Ako, how can an HCO regulate themselves to ensure that their efforts to implement diversity don’t lead them to favor a particular group?

In your post, you mention that it is essential to have diversity in the workplace because research has shown that people like to identify with the person who is giving care to them. However, the patient visits the HCO and cannot see someone they can identify with, whether it is based on race, gender, or sexuality. Does that mean that they will seek medical assistance from somewhere else? I believe that some challenges facing diversity in the workplace are hostility. In a situation where a patient asks to see someone they can identify with, it is the HCO prerogative to direct the patient to the employee who can best serve them regardless of whether they can identify with them.

A welcoming environment indeed is a crucial step to ensure that the employees feel safe to express themselves and start fostering a work environment where they can share ideas and explore their different cultures. However, I believe some challenges are in implementing diversity in the workplace, such as hostility amongst employees against the changes. I think that it is at this point that the HCO values and mission should be reiterated to ensure that all employees align with it. Do you believe it would be necessary for the HCO HR managers to fire employees who prove too hostile towards HCO’s diversity changes?
