GUNS
Guns have been used since around AD 1000 after the Chinese invention of gunpowder in the 9th Century. These were simple weapons, but by the 12th century, the gun designs began advancing with the changing technology, and the use became widespread in Europe and Asia by the 13th century. Guns are ranged weapons designed to use a barrel to launch solid projectiles or other forms of pressurized gas, liquid, or charged particles. Generally, there are 3 major types of firearms, namely, shotguns, handguns, and rifles. Guns are a part of the wider group of weapons used, but the use of guns has risen in the recent past for well-defined legal reasons. Although guns are used for the bigger good, rules have been put in place to draw the line between legal and illegal uses and the licensing of guns. Some laws govern the manufacture and sale of guns.
Now let us take a closer look at some of the smaller guns that are available.
- Pistols
Pistols fall into the category of handguns. A pistol will be your choice if you are looking to get a basic gun for target practice or self-defense. Modern pistols come with a cartridge where the bullets are stored, with an average capacity of 17 bullets in one cartridge. In the earlier days, single shot and manual repeating pistols were common, especially in hunting, but as a result of technology, semi-automatic pistols are now dominant in the market.
An example of a semi-automatic weapon is the multi-shot pistol. As the name suggests, this gun can be fired continuously without reloading. You only have to press the trigger to fire and release it after taking the shot. The cartridge is usually stored in the grip, and on exhaustion, you replace it.
Some of the other types of pistols available in the market include Glock 17, Glock G19, Sig p320, Modular handgun, and the M17.
- Revolvers
Revolvers are semi-automatic handguns with a revolving cylinder with multiple chambers and at least a single barrel for firing. A modern revolver can carry up to 7 bullets, which are stored in the revolving cylinder. It is the perfect choice for cowboys and cowgirls.
A revolver is portable, and you can safely place it in a holster when you carry one. It is a convenient gun for self-defense; hence you can opt to have one in your home if intruders get into your property. A revolver is good for practicing at a shooting range. They are not as effective as pistols; hence it is advisable to invest in one as a complement to a pistol.
The most common revolvers in the market are the Smith and Wesson Model 686.
- Shotguns
It is also known as a scattergun. A shotgun is designed to shoot a straight-walled cartridge, which usually discharges the shots (bullets). The intensity of a shotgun allows for the bullets to travel at high speed through the barrel. This gun is a perfect fit for a person with improved shooting skills or a more seasoned gun owner.
While shotguns are allowing only one shot simultaneously, semi-automatic shotguns can shoot several shots in a row. These are the best for hunting at longer distances.
The common shotguns are the Pump Action and Break action types. Breaking action shotguns are the oldest types and have a hinge at the back for reloading the barrel. Pump-action shotguns hold multiple rounds; therefore, after firing, you push back the pump to reload.
Some of the common types of shotguns in the market are the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500.
RIFLES
- Bolt Action Riffles
It is one of the oldest types of manual firearms available. It is a common one used in hunting and perfect for target practice during your weekend getaway in the countryside.
It is operated by manipulating the bolt through a bolt handle, which in most cases is located on the right-hand side of the firearm. This was developed using the assumption that most users are right-handed. After shooting, you are required to push the bolt forward to reload it, ready for the next shot. The manual operation mechanism, therefore, makes it unsuitable for a case of rapid firing. The rifle also holds a limited number of bullets, making it the last choice for a weapon for self-defense.
It is a perfect choice if you are looking to have a good time perfecting your target shooting skills in nature.
Some of the common types are Ruger America ranch, Savage 110 Storm, and the Winchester XPR.
- Lever Action Rifles
It is part of the firearms that do not self-load, i.e., Category A. It is similar to the bolt-action rifle but has greater intensity and has the ability to fire bullets faster. They are very common among the Westerns and in the cowboy culture.
The operation mechanism involves pulling the lever to reload bullets manually. Once you fire, you can quickly reload another bullet.
Some of the common types include the Winchester 94 and the Marlin 336.
- Semi-Automatic Rifles
With each pull of the trigger, a semi-automatic rifle will fire a single bullet. It is more efficient than the bolt action rifle in which you manually cycle the bolt before firing. Reloading of these rifles is automatic; therefore, firing is much faster. You obviously need to release the trigger after firing, but this rifle still offers the shooter a possibility of firing in rapid succession.
The standard rifle capacity is 30 bullets with a cartridge within the grip and can be easily reloaded. It is commonly used in the military since it is very powerful. With this rifle, the number of effective shots can be increased without necessarily changing the rifle’s aiming position.
The most common of these rifles are the AR-15 and the Browning BAR.
- AK-47 and other Assault Rifles
What makes a firearm an assault rifle? Features of assault rifles include:
- It uses an intermediate-power cartridge.
- Its ammunition is supplied from a detachable magazine.
- It is capable of selective fire, making it possible to switch between semi-automatic and fully automatic fire.
- It is an individual weapon.
- The minimum firing range should be at least 300 meters.
AK-47 is also known as Avtomat Kalashnikov. It was developed in the Soviet Union and designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, hence the name. It is a gas-operated rifle with a detachable magazine, an intermediate cartridge of 7.62x39mm, and a maximum firing range of up to 400 meters. It is efficient in firing in rapid succession and long-range. The firearm has an overall barrel length of 16.3 inches, and the rate of fire is 600 rounds per minute. It has a fully automatic setting, but models with semi-automatic settings are also present in the market. It is commonly used in the military since it is reliable, simple to use and repair, and powerful. It can also be used for hunting.
The SIG 44 is an assault rifle with the power of a machine gun and a rifle’s firing accuracy. It has a lighter cartridge; hence easy to carry and holds up to 30 bullets at a time.
The M16 is known for its intensity and firing accuracy at longer distances. It is the most popular in the US military, and gas has been used in many wars.
There are many other AK calibers, such as AK-74, which has a 5.45x39mm cartridge. Other assault rifles include the HK33, the Heckler, Koch G36, M16 rifles, and SCAR-H rifles.
