Introduction
gender inequality
I chose the image showing three men on a higher level and a woman who is a distance behind, needs to take a step upwards with his hand on the waist showing to be a bit stranded and disappointed. I have done so because I believe there is a sociological significance in how opportunities are given to the different genders. I will use the image to show the theme of unequal chances and opportunities relevant to the theory of Sociological Perspectives on Gender Stratification (1984) and how it has raised questions concerning gender roles, performance, and expectation.
The theme of gender inequality is highly reflective in the photo. In the world today, there is the belief that males are more superior as compared to women. Women have not been given equal opportunities and are not well represented in higher education and employment opportunities despite the laws and policies instilled to harness and promote and the potential in women and make them meaningful in society. In most African countries, there is uneven development between genders. Job opportunities and fields such as engineering, mathematics (STEM), technology, and science have been thought to be male.
Different countries have enacted equality policies, but gender skewing remains an issue, especially in the education sector, where women have a lower completion rate. Few have enrolled in postgraduate studies; this has resulted in this has hence created a culture in which there is sexism and gender bias when it comes to employment opportunities as the male gender will have the upper hand compared to the female. The aspect of gender inequality is not, however, limited to education; the inequality permeates to the different tiers of life in that girls are more likely to drop out of schools due to aspects such as poverty, insecure learning environment, and the cost of education being considerably high and hence minimal opportunities. In different parts of the world, women have been highly discriminated against compared to men, hence creating the need for a consensus to determine how gender biasness should be eliminated today.
