Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-Based healthcare practice is the explicit, conscientious, and judicious use of best practices while caring for a patient. Evidence-Based on an intervention targeting a disease or a population is usually integrated within physicians’ clinical expertise. The knowledge, judgment, and critical reasoning that healthcare providers acquire during training assist them in providing patient-centered care for their clients and their families. In the discussion below, the paper focuses on developing a PICOT question that provides proof of Evidence-based practice. Additionally, the discussion below summarizes a healthcare random clinical trial that researches to achieve evidence-based practice for the targeted population identified using the PICOT question.

PICOT Question: In children between the ages of 6-12 years (population), what is the effect of using Adderall XR (intervention) in comparison to placebo-controlled group (Comparison) to treat Attention Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)(Outcome) to be completed in six months (T). Having developed the PICOT question above, below is a summary of the article, which contains Evidence-Based Practice that approves the usage of Adderall among children of Age 6-12.

Article Summary

10% of the children in the United States are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Stevens et al., 2016). Such statistics make the condition one of the most common conditions among children. The most common drug approved by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) is Adderall, which is sold to parents over the counter to reduce symptoms. The random control trial study aimed at acknowledging if Adderall works for ADHD children to make treating children with ADHD an Evidence-Based Practice (Stevens et al., 2016).

With a sample size of 509 children aged between 6 to 12 years, the random controlled study was conducted through the clinical trial method. A control group was also placed to set as a basis for comparative analysis (Millichap, 2016). Based on the analysis made, the results showed that Adderall could be used to treat ADHD. However, the children showed side effects all through the six weeks of treatment, unlike what was observed by the placebo control group.

In conclusion, based on the study results, it is logical to conclude that Adderall could be used as an intervention for children between the ages of 6-12 diagnosed with ADHD (Millichap, 2016). Using the treatment as approved by the random clinical study makes it an Evidence-Based Practice.
