Evaluation of Spirited Away Movie
There has been a radical change in the film industry in recent decades. The art cinema has resulted in the evolution of the films in the movie industry. Companies such as Hollywood have come up with styles that are more luring and entertaining to the people. The art cinema is thus classical in that it is relying upon what is termed as psychological causation. It has been able to incorporate realistic or in other words psychological complex. In that perspective, the character together with their effects towards each one tend to remain central. In this paper, we shall evaluate a movie entitled ” Spirited Away” to explore the fundamental characteristics as well as the underlying principles as portrayed in the film as they are in the classical film and the art film.
Spirited Away is a film developed by Hayao Miyazaki (one of the famous Japanese director of animations) which is based on the anime to build its characters. He has designed his movie in a style that incorporates imaginations to the viewers thus carrying their attention and urge to keep up the watch. He as well integrates thoughtful messages in his movies whereby they end with a high note and the fascinating ending. Like many of his films, Spirited Away is made with a lot of creativity in it. This movie is excellent and is capable of nurturing the feelings of the viewer through a journey beyond his or her imagination. It has a beautiful ending which entails meaningful messages of human beings and their general relationships to nature.
The movie concerns a journey to the land of spirits. The developer uses a little girl of ten years of age by the name Chihiro as the character to make the journey live. In the movie, Chihiro together with her parents is seen to drive to a new home which is situated in a strange town. The father opts to drive through a shortcut route via a wood ending up to a tunnel front. Chihiro’s parents develop an interest to discover what is on the inner side of the tunnel despite the little girl protest. They end up finding a theme park as well as a food counter, which is full of fresh food. Here, the aspect of art cinema motivating its narrative is observed in this movie (Bordwell, Janet & Kristin 776). That interest to know by the parent exhibits realism as well as overall expressivity (Bordwell, Janet & Kristin 776).
Chihiro’s parent begins to wolf the “theme park” down. The girl senses a probable danger and therefore refuse to feed on that food. Once the night comes, the little girl is terrified of seeing the whole area being filled all over by spirits. Chihiro runs for rescue to her parents only to discover they have changed into pigs. She is saved by a mysterious boy whose name is Haku, who help her from being seen by the spirits. The whole area changes into a hot bathhouse. This was to allow the gods and the spirit to replenish. Haku helped Chihiro to get a job in that bathhouse in a bid to ensure her survival and be in a position to save the parents. Even though the situation is very hard, the girl has no choice but keep up with it and also she has to associate with the monster in the bathhouse. She gives her full effort and ends up saving the parents.
Generally, movies need to have essential elements in order to be accessible and hence successful among the artist’s fans. The chief or critical aim of a film is to be relevant and to interest its audience. The viewers are always and forever will look for bizarre beyond their personal lives. A great film is, therefore, that which create a sense of humor to people seeing it in which they tend to be taken to the world beyond their imagination. The aspect of art cinema continues to be seen on a Spirited Away movie where there no real defined goals, as well as desires, can be observed from these characters.
To ensure the movie or an action remain in the mind of the audience, there must be a likely thing to puzzle their brain. Like it is in Spirited Away, a great movie should relay meaningful messages which are capable of triggering imaginations and further reasoning of the viewers into their hearts. It must remain entertaining throughout to grab the attention of the fans. It should leave suspense that is well laid out to enable the audience to have an imaginative picture of the future of that movie. That is the reason why a happy ending is mandatory.
Spirited Away is one movie that is interesting in that is based on imagination. We see an instance where a human is turned into an animal; Chihiro parents are made to be pigs for having done something wrong. In this, we see the aspect of art cinema in the fact that the character shift from a given situation to the next passively; the case of Chihiro parents changing from human to pig. Realism is perceived still in this same style in which punishment is directed to the little girl’s parent for their mistakes of taking food with no permission.
Often, it is a common thing for kids to be punished for their naughty behavior as observed in fairy tales. However, it is found in this movie breaking the norms, and in this case, adults are instead the ones to suffer this type of punishments. In the film, unlike the routine, the kid is saving the parents while we could have thought it to be vise versa. Hayao Miyazaki manages to employ and develop the imagination to the audience from this point. The viewers are taken to the world of fantasy where they are made to see spirits appearances on a screen under the eyes of Chihiro. Some gods appear to take a look of an animal, whereas there exists that which look like a blob having a red bowl which is positioned on the head.
The spirits, as well as gods, are not scary, and instead, they are very familiar. They appear weird, which the viewers possibly might have had seen some of them while they were small kids in their dreams. It is funny that the humans are being employed by the gods or the spirits in the bathhouse. The worker is animals, and furthermore, these animals are talking. We see them at work because of a cruel witch, observed to be big-headed as well as body. The characters represented are prevalent in childhood and Hayao Miyazaki brings them all up onto the screen.
Spirited Away as well as relays meaningful messages. The Chihiro encounter of a river god during the earlier time of the start of a new job in the bathhouse is evidence of environmental messages. As the movie continues, we find Yubaba sensing the stink spirit. Without a waste of time, she evacuates the bathhouse thereby assigning Chihiro to be the attendant to the stink spirit. However hard a difficult work it seems, Chihiro still is observed to have the spirit cleaned.
She pulls the thorn, but so surprising, the thorn turn to be a bicycle handle whereby, she finds a lot of garbage from the stink spirit. To her astonishment, the stink spirit is a river god, that is very much dirtied through the pollution. Afterward, Chihiro realizes that Haku, who rescued her in childhood is the god of the Kohaku River. This reveals to the audience the association existing amid the human being and nature. Human depends on nature, but unfortunately, they are demolishing the same nature. The message is very much meaningful as it triggers the audience to think about nature and probably how to maintain it following watching Spirited Away movie.
Spirited Away ends beautifully. The No Face is described as a lonely spirit in the movie. This spirit wanders from one place to another without any purpose — this exhibit concept of art cinema in that this character lacks a defined goal within the movie. In the end, this character gets a home to live in. He thus lives with Zenita to whom she looks after. It is really a fantastic ending to the lonely spirit.
The little girl, Chihiro, finally manages to save her parent’s dad and mom from Yubaba. She cracks Yubaba test where she passed the test, thus breaking the spell. The movie end lovely as per the expectation of the audience. Likewise, Yubaba’s son comes back from a journey to Zeniba’s house, where he is seen to have grown up after the trip. We also see Haku recalling that his original name was Kohaku, and as well, he is the god of Kohaku river. He is no longer under control of Yubaba. It is also observed that Chihiro grows up into a good in her experience of the spiritual life.
Spirited Away is a great movie. It renders to the audience the imaginary world that probably they perceived at childhood in dreams. The video also contains a meaningful message about the environment. Finally, the viewers will feel relieved after watching Spirited Away because of its beautiful ending. The application of animation made it easy for the movie to be more interesting and sweet to stare at it.
The motion in the film has been captured in a classic manner. This dramatically makes this movie popular among the audience. The character has been developed to induce imagination to the mind of the viewers thus luring them to follow it to its end. It is, therefore, able to get the full attention of the people watching it grab every bit of it. The genre like metaphor has been used, for instance, river pollution being attributed to how human beings destroy nature to which they depend on for their survival.
The setting of this film is attractive and exciting to the end persons. The creativity in it posses a lot of questions and hence the urge to follow it skipping no single bit in order to link up the themes portrayed in the whole movie. It is full of fantasies and tales.
