European colonization,

On January seventh, in the year one thousand eight hundred and six, the American government and the Cherokee Nation of the Natives concluded a convention in Washington. Articles made between Henry Dearborn, War Secretary, and the undersigned heads and heads of the Indian Cherokee Nation, properly approved and empowered by the President of the United States, for this reason.

Background

On the 7th day of January 1806, a convention was held between both the Cherokee Nation of indigenous people and the USA. It was entered into by the Cherokee that the country was ceded, and the eastern bound of the session was established on top of the island known as Chickasaw Island from the top section of the Chickasaw Ancient Lands to the eastern tip of the Duck Channel region of Tennessee.

At the time of European colonization, North American Iroquoian Indians were one of Europe’s main politically integrated groups. Its name comes from a Greek word, which means “people of distinct language.” Many prefer to be Keetoowah or Tsalagi. The traditional life of the Cherokee and the other south-eastern nations was a significant reflection of that of the Creeks. The Cherokee nation consisted of symbolic cities of the red (war) and white (peace). A supreme warlord was subservient to the chiefs of the red towns, while individual White town officials were the supreme peace lord. The peaceful towns were a place of refuge for wrongdoers; in red towns, war ceremonies were held.

The Cherokees owned a number of stone instruments, including the spears, axis, and chisels, when Spanish explorers met in the mid middle ages. They made pottery, tanning baskets, and corn, beans, and squash. Meat and clothing were supplied to Deer, Deer, and Elk. The Barco-roofed log cabins with one door and a fumigation hole on the roof were the house of the Cherokees. A traditional Cherokee town had such houses and a congregation house where there were general meetings and holy fire. A significant religious celebration was the Busk or Green Corn Festival, the fruit of fir, and the new fire.

The Spaniards, English, and French, like Cherokee, also attempted to colonize the South East. In economic and military relations, by the beginning of the 18th century, the tribe had opted for an alliance with the British. They allied with the British in French and Indian wars; the French were allied with several of the Iroquoian tribes, famous Cherokee enemies. By 1759, the British had begun to pursue an earth-smelting policy leading to the indiscriminate massacres of the indigenous villages, including the Cherokees and the other British Allies. British policy has seriously impacted tribal economies. A part of their land was traded for debt relief by the Cherokee and the Creek in 1773, ceding to Georgia over 2 million acres by way of the Convention of Augusta.

In 1775 the Over hill Cherokee was forced by the Sycamore Shoals Treaty to sell an enormous piece of land in central Kentucky to the private land controlled Transylvania Land Company. The Treaty nevertheless formed the framework for the region’s colonial settlement when sales to private corporations were in breach of British law (“The Avalon: Chickasaw Treaty — 1805”). As the American War of Independence broke out, the Transylvania Land Co. declared its support for the rebels. The Cherokee was convinced that the British had more chance of promulgating border legislation than a new government and announced their willingness to support the Crown. 700 Cherokee invaded the Eaton’s station’s colonists forts and Fort Watauga under chief Dragging Canoe in July 1776.

Key treaty provisions

For itself and on behalf of the American government, the respectfully request administration and Leaders of the Cherokee nation give up all rights, titles, interests, and claims they have, or have ever had, for all that part of the land north of the Tennessee River and west of this river, from the top of the Chickasaw Old Fields. The United States has to be the subject of such privileges. One route had been bounded South of this river, Muscle Shoal, Cyprus Creek, and East, Huang, WA, Lee, or Elk Shore or canyon, and North, ten mi. from that point on that Elk River, along a straight line between its ends to a point on the said Cyprus Creek. The other was at the river, at a place named Muscle Shoals.

The first reservation tract would be considered as the common property of such a river: commencing at the mouth of the Spring Creek and flowing up the river 3 miles straight, then west side 2 miles along the river, thence south along a river parallel to the river of Tennessee, and up the rivers by the water (‘Treaty of the Tennessee’) And the leaders of the U.S. agree to accord all the rights and claims to the Holston River Long Island which they or their nation have.

For the US, Henry Dearborn currently stipulates and agrees that the United States will, given the renunciation by the Cherokees, as mentioned in the preceding article, pay 2 000 dollars in cash to the Cherokee Nation as soon as the U.S. government has adequately ratified the Convention; Including two thousand dollars every year for the next four years totaling ten thousand dollars and that in the Cherokee nation, a grist mill shall be built for the use of the community at the most convenient location, within one year of that date (“Treaty With The Cherokee – 1806” 2020); that the said Cherokees shall be furnished with a cotton-cleaning machine; and also that the old Cherokees shall be furnished with a cotton-cleaning machine.

On the U.S. side, it is also agreed, in order to agree on the following boundary between the nation and the Cherokees south of the Tennessee River, that the government should utilize its own power and best efforts to prevail over Chickasaws Indian nation. The old corner of the river begins at the lower portion of Muscle Shoals, in the mouth of Caney Creek, and continues up the river towards the flat stone or rock in a straight line there. The contracting parties, therefore, accept that the United States is not interested in establishing a line or a border as previously stated but instead seeks to take precedence over the nation of Chickasaw to consent to a line such as an inter-national boundary.

The U.S. also agrees that the claims made by Chickasaws on these two parts, which are reserved in compliance with the First Article of this Convention on the north side of the Tennessee River, are resolved by the U.S. in a manner equitable and that the reservations are given the title of Cherokees.

Treaty outcome

Sometime before April 1807 and before 1804, the United States government realized they were incorrect, as the desired high section of the Elk River basin was not included in the Treaty’s appeals. The agreement entered into force in 1806. Tennessee had already sent inspectors. This district had marked in the spring of 1807 the section and range of routes for the 2nd district surveyors and the faulty South State frontier. In upper Elk River flowed the Settlers. Those colonists are now intruders! They may be physically ejected by federal troops. But the initial error of the 1806 Treaty was made by the federal government. Can you imagine the reaction of Tennessee if the U.S. government sent the U.S. troops to expel them, after being forced to wait for 22, 1784-1806, for their own lands because of its own terrible error?

Go back to the rescue with Jonathan Meigs. He led the American government of the Cherokee Nation and was the Commissioner of the Alliance of the United States in 1806. Double chief Cherokee was also a treaty signatory (Meigs, 2020). Double chief Cherokee was a member. Meigs turned to Double Head for help in an effort to gain the upper lands of Elk. He was murdered in August 1807 in the town of Hiwassee, on the Tennessee River, by Major Ridge and Cherokee prior to Double Head’s aid. One of the reasons for Double Head’s murder was the economic advantages he had achieved for Cherokee territory. Meigs assisted other representatives and made a public deal unless Dual Head expired. On September 11, 1807, the Watershed Upper Elk River became part of America and a memorial to the Cherokee. The Upper Elk River was established.

Conclusion

In summary, some players in favor of the Treaty were motivated by benefit. For example, McIntosh did not have the authority to sign the Treaty but later founded an inn and a tavern along the way. Besides, trader John Forbes, who took over Panton, Leslie & Company, and promoted a treaty between the Creeks, hoped that the land transfer payments would make it possible for the Creeks to repay the debts owed to the company. Some Upper Creeks, mostly Big Fighter, also profited despite opposing the offer. Overall, however, the Treaty was an early move for the federal government to open the Old Southwest to settlement, leading to the gradual expulsion of Southeastern Native Americans to the West.
