Environmental Effects of Cumene Production

Cumene is a harmful environmental chemical whose harmfulness is determined by aromatic and hydroperoxide. It is exposed to the environment through wastewater during production. There is a need to identify and mitigate the environmental effects caused by this process. For example, the producing industries can head towards adopting and developing new technologies that could make the production ecologically friendly.

Cumene is a vaporized liquid in the atmosphere as vapor during the production, transportation, and use. It is also a major cause of pollution due to its presence in finished fuel and crude oil. Cumene is produced from the incomplete burning of fuel from oil splits, vehicles, and the distribution of fuel and evaporation from gas stations (Chudinova et al., 2015). Therefore, leading to pollution of water and air affecting the aquatic animals. During production, Cumene can be exposed to humans. Direct eye contact with its fluid can lead to minor irritations such as slight redness and discomfort in the eyes. Moreover, prolonged skin contact can lead to minor irritations, drying, and local redness of the skin. Besides, too much inhalation of Cumene gas can lead to discomfort of the throat, nose, and upper respiratory region. And when swallowed in large quantities, it may lead to digestion discomfort and be removed during vomiting.

Cumene production can affect the environment hence affecting the human and animals through the gases the process omits. Therefore, humans should avoid direct contact with gases in large quantities. For example, people working in the industry can use protective clothing, including gumboots, masks, and gloves, to avoid direct contact. The industry can also use technology to ensure the gases are purified before being released in air and water bodies. This will help protect the lives of other living animals.
