Task:
Each group of maximum of 3 students decides on a problem from the main topic areas (Environment, Health, Traffic, Media, Humanitarian, or Technology). The group defines the specific problem and brainstorms ideas about the problem, causes, possible solutions, and how to make people aware of this problem. After the brainstorming, the students group their ideas on this paper and submit to the instructor.

- What is the problem? Define the problem that you chose in about six sentences and why you chose it.
Environmental pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment, which causes adverse effects on the environment. Environmental pollution can take three major forms, which are air pollution, water pollution, and lastly, land pollution. Environmental pollution can be attributed to several factors such as urbanization, industrialization, mining and excavation, agricultural activities the use of synthetic materials that are non-recyclable. We choose environmental l problems as the environment forms an integral part of human existence, and the pollution of the environment affects our lives directly.
- Brainstorm for causes. (use any of the pre-writing techniques that you learned) – Write at least 10 ideas
There are several causes of environmental pollution. They include,
- Mining and exploration where the excavators use explosives to unearth the mineral they are mining. The explosive used is often loud and thus causes noise pollution, which is a nuisance. The mines are also if open after mining activities are done, leaving the land ugly, and it in this land that water can accumulate, making them both a physical and a health hazard.
- The second cause of environmental pollution is industrialization, where the manufacturing industries release untreated waste into the water source and the atmosphere and, as result polluting it.
- Urbanization is also another cause of environmental pollution where with the increase and growth of new urban settlements, human activities have significantly increased the rate of environmental pollution.
- The use of synthetic materials such as plastics is also a cause of environmental pollution as these materials, once they are used, are dumped, and since they do not have the ability to decompose, the pollute the environment.
- Deforestation is also another cause of environmental pollution. Here trees are cut down, and when the tree cover reduces, it leads to a decrease in the amount of rainfall received and increases the rate of soil erosion.
- The burning of fossil also contributes to environmental pollution as it increases the number of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and Sulphur iv oxide in the atmosphere. Thus, gases are responsible for causing the acidic rain that is harmful.
- Agricultural activities have also caused a significant amount of environmental pollution as increased agricultural activities leave the soil loose, increasing the rate of soil erosion, which causes water pollution. Also, the use of insecticides and pesticides pollutes the soil.
- The increase in greenhouse gas production has also led to environmental pollution as these gases, once released into the atmosphere, depleting the ozone layer, leading to global warming.
- Wildfires are also another cause of environmental pollution as in combustion, a lot of fumes are released into the atmosphere, which does a great deal of air pollution.
- Transportation is also a major cause of air pollution as motor vehicles burn fuels to run engines and these fumes pollute the air.
- Brainstorm for solutions. (use any of the pre-writing techniques that you learned) – Write at least 10 ideas
Some of the solutions to environmental pollution include;
- The world can encourage more environmentally friendly sources of energy such as wind energy and solar energy, which produces clean energy.
- People should also be encouraged to use public means of transport to reduce the number of waste gases released into the environment.
- Authorities should also ensure that the incidences of wild and forest fires reduce and the number of toxic gases released into the environment is reduced.
- Farmers should also be discouraged from using insecticides and pesticides in their farms and instead embrace organic manure to add fertility to their farms.
- The authorities should also burn synthetic bags and plastics as they pollute the environment with their inability to decompose.
- People should also refrain from carrying out any agricultural activities on the riparian land and as it increases the chances of water pollution.
- Industries should also conform to the waste disposal rules where they are supposed to only release treated waste, reducing the amount of air and water pollution.
- Open ditches that are left after excavation and mining should be filled to not pose an environmental hazard.
- People should also practice environmental conserving measures such as planting trees that increase the amount of oxygen in the air and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and help in attracting rain.
- The use of recyclable materials such as bottles and carrier bags should be encouraged to reduce land pollution following these waste disposal.
- How to create awareness about the problem and its solution – Write at least 5 ideas.
In creating awareness, the following can be implemented;
- The introduction of the 3Rs policy will encourage people to reduce waste, reuse reusable resources, and recycle materials.
- The second way that awareness can be created is by introducing environmental conservation days where the people would engage in the conservation of the environmental measures.
- The public members should also be encouraged to use energy conservation methods such as switching off energy appliances when they are not using them.
- The environmentalists can also use the mass media to educate the public members on the importance of conserving the environment and conservation of natural resources.
- The environmentalist should also encourage people to volunteer in their communities’ cleanups once in a while.
Bonus Question (5%)
- What is the topic sentence? Where do you find it in a paragraph? Why is it important?
A topic sentence is a sentence that describes the main idea or content of a paragraph in which it is appearing. A topic sentence is most of the time found on the first line of a paragraph. The topic sentence is important as it offers the reader an insight into what the paragraph entails. It also unifies the paragraph’s content and shows the order of sentences in that paragraph.
