Edge Computing
Over the decades, since the beginning of the first Operating Systems, Companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have proven to the digital world that they can be trusted with personal data. Therefore it is the moment they earn complete control over our computers, cars, and other data-driven operatives. Literally, Edge is a vague word. It can mean everything or nothing. However, a lot of technology wizards have ventured into this field and have come up with a possible definition. Therefore, what is Edge Computing? The word edge in the linguistic context means a geographical distribution. In contrast, Edge computing is a type of computing that takes place near or at the data source. This means that edge computing doesn’t rely on the cloud; instead, the cloud relies on the edge (Satyanarayanan, 2017).
Why is Edge Computing important? It is clear that edge computing is a developing method of data processing, where computer experts assume that there is no need for the cloud. It is reported that a few years down the line, about 175 zettabytes of data will be generated all over the globe, and over three-quarters of the data will be the work of edge devices. Moreover, being a well-distributed computer model, edge computing creates standardized ways to maximize business and industrial operations efficiently, improve their safety and performances in areas such as business processes and ensure it is always available when required. Edge computing, however, has proven to be the leading type of computing used to acquire the modern transformation of business operations. With edge computing at its best, it has led to increased productivity and efficiency, therefore allowing personnel in businesses and companies to focus ahead on other more valuable operations and activities (Khan et al., 2019).
What impact will Edge Computing have in industries? In industries such as retail, cloud computing was used, but it was not easy for businesses that venture into online shopping. Therefore edge computing was introduced, and it has and will impact hugely on these industries. A lot of customer computing tasks such as adding data or calculating prices on a shopping cart have been made much easier by edge devices, which are cached by these data making it easier for operation. In addition, industries such as businesses have developed unique software for facial recognition that will see that as customers enter the business sector, the software will identify the customers, therefore minimizing certain risks. In automation industries, Uber and Google are in their development stages to come up with self-driven cars or automated vehicles. These huge amounts of data can only be processed by edge devices. And thus, this type of computing shall massively impact most industries and make life experience simpler. Besides, industries such as Networking are steps ahead in developing fast and lucrative networks of 4G and 5G due to edge computing’s flexibility in designing networks (Lee, 2017). Soon, another level of communication network will be in-market because computer data processing increases with time.
