Economics in the ABC TV Show Home Economics

Home Economics is an ABC Comedy Pilot written by Colton and Aboud. This TV series talks about a modern family made of three adult siblings. One is in the 1 percent, the second one is in the middle-class, and the last one is barely holding on. Sarah is a therapist for kids who are at risk. Sarah is married to a teacher, and they can be seen scraping to make ends meet. Of the other siblings, Sarah is the poorest and earns the least money. Tom is the middle sibling and in the middle class. He is of age, and his economic status is different from the rest. Tom is worried that though he is a good novelist, his books have not been selling well. He strives to be where his brother is financially and doing everything he can, not to be like his sister. Tom is in a creative field, a field that keeps on fluctuating. He keeps having anxiety because he did not have a family when he started, but now he has twins.

Marina is married to Tom, and she is a former lawyer who is constantly tired of caring for daughter and twin boys. Marina wishes to go back to work if only she could escape the children. This film reveals various social classes in society. Every sibling is in a particular class and has his/her own share of problems. The audience can see how the economy has affected the daily lives of the characters. The characters are living in a modern urbanism society, and there are various expectations. Teachers and lawyers are expected to be doing well or living in the middle-class status, but here Marina is struggling, and she even finds it hard to raise her three children.

In the Home Economics TV series, there is a large variation in wealth, power, authority, material possession, and prestige in society. This can be noted in how the three siblings and their families have differences in accessing education and healthcare. They all have different ways of spending their leisure time, depending on their income. Sarah is a therapist for kids who are at risk, a job that earns her very little money. Her job is very noble and considered socially important by her siblings though it has no money. Though this job is very imperative, it does not offer much financial reward. Sarah can be poor because she works full time, but her wages are below the poverty line. Tom, on the other hand, is a creative writer who has sold various books.

His lifestyle is determined by his ability to sell books. His books can be considered a product in the market, influenced by how the people respond. The market is always fluctuating, depending on the status of the economy. Tom has been doing well in selling the previous book, but his last book has not been sold. This has affected his ability to provide for his family. Without money and savings, Tom is worried he is going to be like his sister. It’s easier for a person to go to a lower social class in any society than it’s easy to climb the ladder towards financial freedom. Their jobs, clothing, cars, neighborhood, and talking can show their economic status. Their values are different, though they all have one thing in common: providing for their families.
