Four years ago, I began volunteering at a tutorial centrally located within an underdeveloped community in the Bronx. Being a close-knit organization, I observed the tutorial’s managerial side and the practicalities involved in operating a small business. Although we approached a deficit at times, we prioritized affordability to guarantee that the community’s students had access to academic resources. As I gained experience, the site directors allowed me to manage fiscal matters within the business. I remember probing through spreadsheets and meticulously examining every financial decision to ensure that we can offer tutoring services at affordable prices. This was my first insight into the world of finance and economics at the age of fifteen. Through studying finance at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, I aspire to help businesses in underdeveloped regions and live up to the school’s motto, “Developing leaders who make a positive difference in the world” and I trust that Ross will enable me to pursue my career goals, as well as equip me with a diverse education.
At the Ross School of Business, I hope to pursue a major in finance while learning about the connection between finance, government policy, and economics. Ross classrooms offer an unparalleled education where students learn to use business for the greater good. Exploring classes like “Base of the Pyramid: Business Innovation and Social Impact” and “Finance for Societal Good” will help me learn about how different fields and industries within business can be beneficial to society.
Pursuing my interests in international relations, I plan to get involved with the Global Semester Exchange program and spend a semester abroad in Spain at the ICADE Business School in Madrid. By participating in the program, I will learn about business on a global scale, while also immersing myself in Spain’s local culture. Additionally, I cannot wait to seek global internship opportunities beyond the summer with Ross’ Global Internship programs. Completing an internship in a major global business hub will allow me to learn more about international business and the different cultures that exist in different countries.
At the Ross School of Business, I hope to get involved in the different student organizations available. I plan to join the Global Investments Committee and attend workshops about the principles of finance by various guest speakers. Using the Tozzi Trading Floor available on campus, I can understand how decisions are made when conducting market research and trades.
Aside from academic and career interests, the University of Michigan provides many opportunities to explore my own inquisitiveness through Ross’ Outdoor Club and their Southeast Asia Business Association. Participating in the Outdoor Club would allow me to explore the surrounding nature around Michigan while also getting the chance to become friends with people who share similar interests as me in our search for adventure. Additionally, the Southeast Asia Business Association would allow me to create bonds with people who share the same cultural background by participating in and organizing various cultural and professional events.
By studying finance at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, I aspire to improve businesses and educational institutions in underdeveloped regions, and I trust that the Ross School of Business will equip me with the diverse education required to do so.
