A data collection instrument refers to a device used to collect data (Rahi, 2017). It can also be defined as methodologies used to identify information sources and collect information during evaluation. Questionnaires generally consist of a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers which are devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study (Rahi, 2017). A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions for the purpose of gathering information from respondents (Rahi, 2017).
A self-response survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted for collection of primary data. The use of questionnaires became appropriate and was chosen over the other data collection instrument because of the following; It is free from the bias of the interviewer since the respondent’s answers are in his or her own words and they have adequate time to give well thought out answers (Rahi, 2017). It also ensures that there is low cost of data collection especially when the distance involved is large (Rahi, 2017) and for the respondents who might be uneasy to approach, the questionnaires ensure that they can be reached conveniently (Rahi, 2017).
3.7. Data Collection Procedure
According to (Quinlan et al., 2019), data collection procedure explains the specific steps to be adopted in gathering and measuring information on variables of interest, in an established systematic fashion that enables one to answer stated research questions and evaluate outcomes. In a research, the data collection procedure is identified to act as a plan and a guide for obtaining results to solve the assumptions stated in the statement of the problem (Quinlan et al., 2019). Its procedure makes work easier and also aids in simplifying the tedious process for the researcher (Quinlan et al., 2019).
The data collection procedure the study will focus on is the emailing of questionnaires to respondents. The method entails drafting both open-ended and close ended questions that the individuals will offer answers for feedback (Rahi, 2017). The questionnaires are easy to draft and also save on the cost element and thus its preference (Rahi, 2017). Similarly, it is convenient for respondents to give their feedback and this means that their normal routine will not be interrupted (Rahi, 2017).
