Citizenship
Citizenship in the United States, according to Aristotle, is determined the power. Only those with power to control the judicial state are considered as citizens. Those of low class in the United States are seen as non-citizens of that state. According to Aristotle, citizenship in the United States is determined by the rich and their participation in offices.
Aristotle defines a citizen as the one who has the power to participate in the decision making of a certain state or admission of the judicial state of any state. From his definition of a citizen, it is truly evidenced that we are not citizens of the United States. A real citizen of the United States is determined by birth, whereby all those born in the U.S are regarded as citizens of that state. (Mann, 24). Their citizenship is less determined by political participation and more determined by the legal relation to rights and privileges. According to Aristotle, he considers many people who think they are citizens in the U.S as not citizens. Those who have applied to be citizens in the United States, Those living in mere residence such as slaves. He does not consider women as citizens. Boys who are younger and cannot participate in military service and the older men are termed as semi-citizen. He also considers those in exile as non-citizens. We really do not qualify to be true citizens because we do not participate in deliberative and judicial admission of the state. According to Aristotle, citizenship is limited to office participants, whether deliberative or judicial.
There different types of government. They include; oligarchy, aristocracy, democracy, and polity. According to Aristotle, I can say we have an oligarchy government. Oligarchy government is the one whereby power is exercised by a few people (Myers 301). These people are wealthy and use power to enhance their status further. In Aristocracy, power and influence are exercised by a minority of people. Their power is passed from their families. In democracy government, those in power are selected through voting by fellow citizens. In the polity government, it leads accordance with the interest of all citizens. Therefore, I believe that polity is the best type of government because it creates happiness for its citizens.
In conclusion, governance in the United States is not concerned with its citizens’ well-being and satisfaction. Only those in power are considered as citizens of the state.
