Censorship essay on the ‘brother.’

Brother is the second novel written by David Chariandy’s, it probes the ramifications of police brutal violence on the communities that are marginalized, delivering a nuanced portrait of a struggling family to remain afloat as situations hung against them. It was set during the summer of 1991, Toronto housing complex. The narrative talks of two heritage brothers, ultimately testing the patience of their hardworking Trinidadian single mother Ruth, who neglect to either seek or accept other’s help. There has been rising tension on two sides, claiming that the book doesn’t meet requirements because of racism characterizations nod grief, while others supporting that it uses precise language with community involvement and some saying it contains key life skills to the students and the learners at large.

The book should not be banned because it contains important life skills and a clear reflection of the life events we live in. This helps in mentoring students for tomorrow’s life. Michael stays with his older brother, Francis, together with their mother Ruth. The books tells us how the three strived for a better life. Just like any mother, Ruth is so the concern of the two boys welfare. She works triple and double shifts the same as other residents in the area. She is a single mother and strict in monitoring the two boys. The two brothers Michael and Francis, have their specific dreams; they often escape to Rougue valley, the nearby urban oasis, and start hanging out at a barbershop with their neighborhood kids. Francis is attracted to hip-hop and uses the local barbershop to experiment with his skills with rhymes and beats. Michael begins to fall in love with a girl whose father shares origin with Ruth, her mother. All these events happened without their mother’s awareness (Leufer, 2020).The constant poverty in their families killed their confidence and cleared their plans. The tragic summer shooting, which happened in 1991, resulted in a police crackdown and developed to another violent act that forever changed their lives. All these are things happening in every teenager’s life, Brother Crackles in a unique way and bring hardship and survival into life in the senses surrounding the African Canadians. I don’t see a reason of burning such an educative book and a guiding book that motivates the teenagers on life challenges and some point how to deal with it. The book talks of boys high school years and how they struggle to stay strong regardless strong currents and waves on their way .Problems are harsh situations makes us better people by connecting us to positive things, this is  common statement among the social people, this is really appreciated in this book, when Aisha’s father dies, she present herself in a saddler state and sees as the situation as the end of everything , but then again we see some sense of change on how this perceived, the family navigates lost hopes and injured dreams. During Aisha’s father funeral, the lost hope is revived and we realize that loss is not the end everything but an opportunity for new growth. Beside prejudice, Brother Exposes existence of dynamic relationships, fitting to the tittle, Brother entail our lead fellows and older brother in the other case. David has made students believe that those in positions are being monitored and act as role model. Everybody knows that leader’s actions and choices has consequences affect the people surrounding them. It is so easy to forget that in whatever we do we are being watched by others. Those watching us could be child, adult or even teens this is clear lesson from this book and a reason why banning this book is limiting ourselves from getting key community lessons which is rarely learned.

Brother is a timely novel, composed of precise and rhythmic language with a figurative language and involvement of community in various ways. The language used by the Canadian writer which was so figurative includes ‘His skin was much darker than mothers, but had been told he was not black like her another one is ‘I walk home in the dark. I am hunched down against the wind and cold, and there is needled burning in my spine’ this are figurative words which attracts students attention abs are also language friendly thus no harm to the students but instead improves the communication and students languages (Webster, 22). The book is also short and sweet delivering its story in clear and efficient way, it intersperse its plots with past and also present narratives. At the beginning this seem mysterious especially when if you manage in collecting this wonderful novel without going through its blurb, as you read, you will see unexpected groove and it will make you notice where it want to expose you faster. Many people would wish this be structured same as other typical books, and that is why many are confronted with a different narrative that seem deep into the development of Francis and Michaels confusing realities which is similar but on checking it keenly it is different. He also points out some of community rules which is real but none has ever been keen in exposing it. Francis I this case is the protector, holding the leadership role .He protects Michael small and innocent who is four years younger. This book highlights importance of our communities in the society to the society and how it affects some individual’s .We are basically born to live and interact with others and this is a big reason why we are not alone in the world. Ranging from friends, neighbors to blood relations and even those that do not exist, we are all affected by this affiliations. Brother shows importance of communities and the way a non-cohesive society can bring tension and cause rise in internal problems to people already weak targets during situations where injustice and prejudice is wrong. The story tells us how immigrant children has pressured their parent’s performance and satisfaction in fulfilling their desires. The book also makes good use of accorded music, or even more globally to creativity and novels art .Symbolism was conveyed at some point in the story that exposed the difficulty, there is also mixing of different music types from different parts (Banks, 16) .David makes the story short and mesmerizing to a point it holds emotion and power in the message trying to convey.

Brother is full of racism characterization and grief. The book should be banned because the setting in it did not fit the entire racial domains. He is a black guy and we expected that he should have used characters of varying racial status and possibly balance. Most of the characters used are blacks, this is showing how occupied he is, self-centered and single racial love. The mother to the two brothers is black, the two brothers are actually black. How would white children’s respond to this? I am imagining watching a play possibly acted by the same brothers, it sounds bad seeing only blacks on stage, and this is another form of racism. Brother brings indecent reflection between racialized people and police. With claims that this is not personal case for either people with black or brown skin, this experience is not clear .The difference in understanding that exist between the police interaction and people of the color. The book shows that the interactions can be traumatic even though some sees this as routine or even harmless. When brother talks of toll living in the society where you are not appreciated based on yours skin color or even background, this makes the characters in the book perform under pressure .The characters act forcefully in a way that pleases others and makes them comfortable , regardless of this, the toll takes on their mental health. The nature in which he used the black people and their life status will make a grade 11 student look at it at different angle, the white students in a class of different social classes will see themselves dominant from their black counterparts. In the brother the whites are controlling the blacks, and the black seem to have less powers, picking from police brutality, this can cause an alarming divisive state in a class, he should have given   a neutral position in both racial classes (Hodge, 12). David charyandy gave a stake position and supported society’s views that in real the blacks are poor. The black woman and the state the two brothers are living is unfriendly.

In conclusion, I don’t really support banning of brother by David chariandy, this is because the book good side outweigh the negative side. This is a motivative and educative guide, it talks of all aspects of life and the relationship to community. The scene set up took place in a place with people of low social class, showing how they are thriving to keep things in order. Just as the real life situation is, such people living in such conditions and when compared to Francis and Michaels behavior one would easily confused. The book teaches of having good moral in the society and encourages every individual to aspire for a change .The book language is clear and fit into various classes. It is a book which fit all ages.
