Celtic Art

Celtic art is linked to people known as Celt. These were the people that spoke the Celtic language in Europe during pre-history as well as modern time. Celtic art is one that covers time, geography, and culture. The following is one of the images of Celtic Art.

The above image shows a decorative theme of the La Tene style between 50 BC – 50 AD. La Tene style of art was very stylized.  Celtic represents the European culture during the iron age beginning from 1000BC towards the Roman Empire’s conquest. The art illustrates recurring patterns and abstract elements: geometric, curvilinear, and spiral and interlacing forms that are highly Irish (Adams, 2018). The style was so popular in Europe, including Gaul. The art puts significant emphasis on particular animal shapes and the application of specific metalworking methods in Irish, which were significantly Celtic. Another influence on the La Tene style was classical work from the Mediterranean area. The art from this region led to vegetal motifs such as the acanthus leaf and large ribbon interface.

The discovery of carved stone came about in 3200-2500BC. The above was a decorated stone from Aberdeenshire. These stones are similar in size and have decorations of spirals and curved motifs famous within Celtic art. The stone comprises of four knobs; three of them consists of spiral decoration and dots. Some research has revealed that carved stone came about as an attempt to discover the platonic solid.  The five mathematical solids were discovered by Plato, who was a Greek mathematician. The Greeks taught that the five solids formed a primary basis for patterns of physical creation. The four solids came about as archetypal patterns constituting the four-element that is earth, water, air, and fire. Through radial projection, platonic solids get traced to the earth’s surface, where every face comprises angles and shape. Carved stone balls come in different shapes, but many of them entail bosses equal to the number of faces on the platonic solids. These carved stones had geometric patterns, which further made them Irish Celtic.
