The most interesting case associated with the study includes the one revolving around Amanda Todd. Todd was a fifteen-year-old girl who hung herself. Concerning the case, the victim who harassed her should be blamed for her suicide. The main reason was that she was a shy girl, but her worsening situation led to her posting a heartbreaking video on YouTube. She talked about her experiences with bullying online. She shot the video in black and white through a series of flashcards. She talked with a man who asked her to show him her beautiful breasts, which she did. The man threatened her later through Facebook, telling her that if she did not put a show for him, the photo would be sent to her family, schoolmates, and friends. The situation saw the man had acquired all her personal information on Facebook. The man sent the photo to everyone in the same manner as told by the threat. The situation influenced her to become depressed and anxious (Pendergrass & Wright, 2014). She turned to alcohol and drugs to cope up with her stress. The man who threatened her created a profile with Amanda’s breasts’ photo as the profile picture, making her school mates make continuous insults and abuses. If the man had not bullied her through her online platform, she would be alive today.
The death of Amanda Todd is a wrongful loss of the life of a young girl who had a brighter future. It also serves as a representation of the corruption of a minor. She was too young for the man to demand her to show her breasts. The man should have considered looking for an adult to abuse her sexually. The worst thing was sharing photos with different platforms. Amanda had a silent and relaxed background when it came to her life. Despite using her social media platforms for communication, she was always focused on keeping her life to herself (Pendergrass & Wright, 2014). The man corrupted her mind by promoting fear in her life that those around her would ridicule her. The man also played on her confidence and feared, which led to her demise. This was a wrongful thing to undertake since it caused more harm than what the man had intended.
When it comes to know about someone who has been a victim of cyberbullying, I have come to a point whereby I have never met anyone who has gone through the issue. However, ethical norms are important when it comes to youths using online platforms for their communication. Ethical conduct means that the government and social media platforms should ensure that the ones joining the platforms are above eighteen years old. Children should not be allowed to join online platforms for their safety. investigations should also be conducted to ensure transparency and honesty in the communication process (Haggard & Lindsay, 2015). Communication should be made to become more focused on influencing positive developments in society. Ethical norms should be about caring for the well-being of individuals using social media platforms.
Media should be censored during learning hours. Students should not carry their mobile phones while being on the school premises. When it comes to using public connections, the networks should be censored to ensure that social media is a problem. Specific social media platforms should not be accessible through mobile phones (Florida Atlantic University, 2017). It is important to evaluate the common platforms among students and eliminate the possibility of experiencing cyberbullying. Schools should ensure that students are kept through programs meant to train them to become more careful about accessing online materials and communication. Specific communication developments should be undertaken to ensure the protection of the students.
