Article Summary: Quantitative Research Study

The quantitative research study focused on implementing a hospital-mandated central venous Catheter (CVC) training program. The research study reveals that the simulated program was to be completed by 102 participants at the university simulation centre regardless of speciality before house staff is allowed to insert CVCs in the clinical space. The article discusses the administration and content of the course and access the cost and focus on future directions. The study utilized a quantitative research design, which involved 102 participants who completed the course training for a completion rate of 100%. Fourteen specialists went through the training, and 10 participants failed on the first attempt, and they required further training at a 10% failure rate. Eleven instructors taught for 129 hours. The assessment was done using a checklist and a global rating scale verified by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program’s total cost was $30,938. Bonz et al. (2017) concluded that as the institution is in its second year of operating a mandatory hospital-wide CVC training program, they will continue the training and that the training program is a type of mandate that is “necessary for improved patient care and that other institutions can gain from our experiences in implementing simulated procedural training as policy” (Bonz et al., 2017).

Insights drawn from the study reveal that it was limited to addressing the feasibility of instituting a comprehensive training program as a policy as a quantitative research study. Furthermore, researchers reveal that given that it was a quantitative study backed up by literature, there were costs that accompanied the training program. It can be deduced that while analyzing quantitative research, it is essential that quantitative research relies on numerical data and statistical tests to understand the world. Also, it can be deduced that quantitative research entails larger samples to provide meaningful results.
