Aristotle on Friendship
According to Aristotle, there are three friendships based on pleasures, utilities, and virtues. He argues that human beings exist as social animals in true friendships, and creating social networks is crucial to survival. However, Aristotle also suggests that wicked men cannot forge true friendships because their love is not genuine, in that it lacks compassion, steadfastness, and completion. Thus, Aristotle posits that wicked men do not love themselves; hence, they are not worthy of love.
Additionally, Aristotle argues that there are three different types of friendships. For starters, utility friendships are based on the mutual benefits each party brings to the table. These types of friendships are common among business partners, schoolmates, and colleagues at the workplace. Next, friendships of pleasure are common among friends who share common interests and a sense of humor. These friendships are often temporary and easily dissolved once the useful, pleasurable moments cease to exist. Finally, the third category of friendships is referred to as perfect friendships. Perfect friendships bring together men who are alike in terms of virtues, thus enabling them to attain a common purpose of friendships.
Ultimately, Aristotle argues that friendships are based on moral responsibilities. Moral responsibilities can be categorized as either individual or communal. The concept of moral responsibility is paramount for holding persons responsible for their actions and behaviors. For instance, the concept implies that friends have the moral duty of helping those in need in society. Moral friendships are thus grounded on a special obligation to friends, family members, and society. Healthy friendships can help people to alleviate stress, promote brain development, and make better lifestyle choices.
