A Carbon Dying World

A rhetorical question that has been lingering in the minds of many has been on how effective the contemporary world can get on track in its effort to avert the threat of climate change.  After almost a half a century since global warming initially entered the political podium of the world, surprisingly, the whole globe is still pondering about how humanity would be influence effectively to get more serious concerning the preservation of their well-known civilization that has been achieved through thick and thin as recorded in human history. The climate action activists are of recently yet arguing about composing compelling narratives about a carbon managed world. Yet these activists have a shortage of ideas on a strategy regarding how the target readers will be persuaded to read such narratives and even take action as active agents in a carbon dying world. Jonnie, the new member of the ecological activist group in Florida after meeting with Connie in a hotel in a town in Florida, both coming for a cup of coffee, find themselves sitting around the same table. While the two gentlemen who are strange to each other, start conversing, they realize that they share some common values about the current world of heatwaves especially along the Gulf Coast.   As both share about the status quo of Florida town, Jonnie, admits that “although the residents of Florida   understand a bit of the global warming, they do not know well about it. For sure, global warming has never been registered in the residents’ gut and that is the irritating reason as to why it has never been part of most of the Americans culture.”

As the conversation continues, Jonnie realize that Connie is the chairman of a local group which he has been hearing about it for several years since he was born back in nineties. The Connie’s village group is renowned for environmental extremism and its members are from residents living along the Gulf Coast in Florida and the neighboring community.  The environmental extremist has been on the ground to postulate that his only response to the carbon dying world is nothing other than a mere reminder that the world has never been having the compelling stories about the scorching heatwaves, ferocious hurricanes and devastating floods that would hit somewhat harder in future than it is experienced today. However, Connie claims that “poems, books journals and other scripts have been globalization and global business yet without demonstrating about their adverse effects.”  Thinking about both aspects as a sword that cut across both sides would help the world society imagine more about what a carbon-managed globe would appear is very critical. Yet, we also need more fascinating narratives about the falling crazy ice high-rises to win the minds and hearts of people that have been opposing the stiff choices the world has been making and later face the repercussions after failing to live up to the standards we establish for our future corban free world.

The ecological activist on the other hand in response at first calls Connie his brother. Jonnie tells  his new brother that “you will wait for long for such stories in form of written scripts get in to the college libraries and even flood the global market similar to what new products about new life style from Nollywood movies has been doing.” Jonnie further tells his friend that most of the Florida residents who seem to be somehow lively have been worried and mourning about their losses as they struggle for survival. Connie further tells his purported brother that the crazy ice tornados in the climate emaciated future are yet to come when the world societies will be living in a period when the human age will be over. The extremist continues to discuss with his brother in a carbon dying world on the yesterday’s breaking news tale of the residents staying in a Malta apartment building along the Gulf coast who were adversely affected by the escalating sea levels that had inundated most of these famous global coastline claiming lives of several people.

Throughout the conversation between the morning Florida’s hotel customers, it illustrates the prevailing condition that as the globe warms, the Florida and its neighboring world, the extreme weather occurrences have been becoming more intense and frequent. Due to this reason, the sea levels have continued to rise as prolonged droughts still put pressure over food crops while many animals and some plant species are being further driven to their extinction. Thus, it has been very hard to conceive what the humans as individuals would undertake to resolve the global challenge of this severity and scale. The prevailing controversial good news has been the fact that Florida residents are not alone. This status is due to the reason that the individuals, communities, businesses, cities, faith groups, schools, and some other organizations have been taking action against the climate change over the world. The people have started fighting like never before since they have realized that a carbon dying world is still living with them and as if individual lives depend on global warming.

As time goes by, Connie and Jonnie are joined by young lady with Indian face.  The young lady is late for the breakfast and finds that the hotel it full to the brink and the only remaining vacant seat is close to two strange gentlemen from the far end corner of the building. As she makes steps forward towards the vacant seat, she finds that the two close gentlemen to an they are sharing same table are deeply immersed in their conversation. The gentlemen only releases they have a guest in their coffee table as Brenda pushes the seat back to have a seat.   They all say “Hi” to each other as the conversation is cut short by the interruption but continues again after a short while. Brenda assumes that as usual for aging men, the gentlemen were sharing about politics and decides to give it a deaf ear. However, as she orders for the tea, the young lady finds that the conversation is taking and ending towards another direction contrary to what she had presumed.

Brenda’s attention is caught when she hears that one of the gentlemen, whom she later come to realize was called Connie, attempting to explain to the other about the climate change being overwhelming. She also listens carefully and realizes that Connie appreciates that when it comes to climate change and science, everything becomes complex, but concerned about the future impacts of global warming, and a lot is still unknown. As the extremist continues with his argument, the young Indian lady is fascinated when the purported speak in the round table suggests that “while genuine solutions would require a generally global scale action, there exists some choices that people at individual level can make especially in their day-to-day lives in effort to lessen their personal influence on the devastating global warming. At this point Brenda realizes that what the gentleman is trying to put across is what similar to what she had read in the newspaper from her homeland in India while in college.

Brenda is new to the city’s current news and information since she had just landed the other day to continue with her master’s degree after securing a scholarship in the up country. What is more concerning and surprising is to find that the up country is sharing similar climate changes with her country yet both countries are far away from each other. The Indian student in Florida now decides to actively participate in the conversation. Jonnie responds to Connie’s argument as Brenda listens very closely, by affirming that climate change has been amongst the greatest challenging global issues that humanity seems to have ever experienced. Jonnie points out that “at stake is in overall is thousands of million lives, ecosystems and innumerable species, the health as well as the economic viability together with this planet’s habitability in the near future.”

At this juncture, the Indian lady offers her ideas as she is now well fashioned with the topic at hand. Brenda is currently taking a master’s degree related to Climate Change Management in the University of Florida. She argues that, “climate change is fortunately solvable. The world has the necessary technologies. The science is with us. What we only need at the moment is good leadership with great courage of changing the course.” Before, the young lady continues with her interesting argument, which seems to have changed the direction of the discussion from impossibility to possibility in terms of carbon dying world, Jonnie who is adamant with his argument interacts her and suggest that “Carbon dioxide with other heat-ensnaring gases have been the major drivers of the devastating global warming. Thus, as climate change may not be completely stopped, its increase can only be slowed down.”

Brenda appreciates Jonnie’s contribution then she continues by putting across that “in order to effectively escape the worst concerns of the present climate change; we will only need to arrive at “net zero” of our carbon emissions at most by 2050. This net zero would suggest that, on a balance there will be no extra carbon dumped in our atmosphere than being taken out. Brenda attempts to show that in achieving a net zero carbon emissions, the world needs massive transformation on how the world societies produce and even consume energy such as the electricity. The Brenda’s argument is that at global scale, there is a need for a newer and better transformation of ways of life regarding resources extraction and their consumption. The world population should to halt deforestation while also embracing climate-friendly farming systems.

As the student attempts to chair the impromptu meeting as at now Connie has little to say, Brenda suggests that for the case of the United States, the scale of climate change transformation will need a substantial federal policy that would put a high price on the carbon. This step forward towards mitigating global warming which is responsible for climate change will further require an international cooperation since climate change is a global phenomenon. For instance the Indian lady quotes the Paris Treaty that was signed back in 2016 which reflects the globe’s iconic effort towards solving climate change at this juncture, even though the agreement does not include carbon emissions declines the world needs at the moment. Hence Brenda concludes by saying that “much about climate change mitigation measures still remains undone and the world’s population should make more efforts as soon as possible.” Immediately after Brenda concludes her remarks, everybody around the table appeared wearing a happy face. Connie realizes that the time has gone and hurriedly binds the others goodbye and walks out of the hotel as Jonnie follows him after a short while.

The impromptu discussion in the Florida hotel that almost took one to two hours demonstrates that in an effort to arrive at net zero carbon emissions, the global population needs to perform better than merely reducing emissions. This aspect will help to actively eradicate carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere while offsetting its effects. The most effective and easiest approach of doing all this task is through planting forests by practicing afforestation or even restoring old forests through reforestation. Besides, other improved land managing practices may help, as new technologies which suck carbon dioxide out of air famous referred to as ‘direct air capture’, and  preventing it from exiting smokestacks through ‘carbon capturing and storage. However, it is important to note that the speed, scale, and the cost seem to be the central obstacles to such technologies and techniques. At state level, strong state policies with large-scale investments in development and research are critical.
